What is the issue with my son playing outside shirtless? Is not wearing a shirt outside inappropriate?

Our DS likes to go fishing and take off his shirt. He is somehow innately a country bumpkin despite never having lived outside of the city. I just laugh about it.

We have two boys and never cared when they were playing outside shirtless.

The most important part of that statement for me is "playing outside."
That's always a win.

I don’t care. I also don’t care if little girls are shirtless. They’re kids.

Cover up. No one wants to see (for both genders) shirtless bodies, bum crack showing, excessive cleavage, underwear showing, butt hanging out from under the shorts, someone scratching their genitals etc. If it is normal in your neck of the woods then you are very low class.

I can live with that. We are low class.

Let your kids be happy and comfortable. Anyone who has a problem with boys not wearing shirts at and around the home is just trying to create a problem when none exists.

If kids are playing outside instead of sitting with their faces glued to a tablet or smartphone, I couldn't care less if they have a shirt on or not.

I think everyone should be dressed outside- totally agree with the poster who wrote "no shirt, no shoes, no service!" I certainly wouldn't say anything to anyone else's kid or make remarks to my kid that it's trashy or bad. I would just comment that different families have different rules.

If this makes me a Karen, so be it.

there could also be an undercurrent of class issues here. in a different time/place, playing outside without a shirt could go along with the perception that you are poor. having a shirt on is "proper." an UMC kid can do whatever, not always the same rules for poor kids.

I have no idea why someone resurrected this thread from may (wishing for better weather maybe?). But it’s timely because my 7 yo forgot to wear a shirt to school yesterday! He came home and took off his jacket and was bare chested underneath! I said why didn’t you put on your back up clothes at school and he just shrugged and said he kept his jacket on all day. I just laughed.
