| Love it! Will do everything I can to make it pass. Anyone know if we can call some representative or something? |
Have you lived in Arlington? They have county-provided trash and it's fine. I am fine with Fairfax doing this. I just don't know why it will take a long time. Seems like they're dragging out the changeover. |
| Our little neighborhood has at least three different trash companies servicing it. Each company has to have their (bad gas-mileage) trucks follow the same route every week. It’s so incredibly wasteful, drives me insane. I’d love county-wide service. |
| Of course county service is preferable. Can't tell you how many times we had to switch trash collection companies. After weeks of missed collection days the owner finally claimed drivers kept leaving because their special licenses were more valuable elsewhere and only the dregs of society were left to recruit. Never seemed like something best left to the private sector. |
Wow you must be pretty special to move to Fairfax and think it's comparable in any way to DC "government" Ever notice all the business that moves to Virginia? |

| I have lived in communities with centralized trash service and it was 100% horrible. I equate a county run waste management program with hours on the phone wasted to report repetitive missed pickups, raccoons and other pests tearing apart trash bags because the bins were overloaded after multiple missed services, and empty promises to send a truck and ultimately me stinking up my own car to personally drive the leftover trash to the dump My blood pressure still rises with frustration about time that I could’ve been productive or spending time with my family, instead of Leaving message after message and sitting on hold for hours to report that my trash had been missed yet again. Please leave us with our own choice on our trash service provider. My experience with Nightingale waste management has been 100% rewarding, and every time I see their trucks drive down my street, I’m so grateful that I moved to my neighborhood and was able to make that choice. |
| Only the trash companies who are afraid they will have to competitively bid for work oppose this. |
A yearly REC Center membership in Fairfax County is $700. A yearly membership at Planet Fitness is $350. As you can see, Fairfax County is well known for never managing to compete with private companies. The proposed sanitation district is even worse because the county is going to buy service from private companies and then resell it to the residents. The is no savings due to scale because there are only about three private trash haulers for over a million people. |
Planet Fitness isn’t comparable to a rec center. Stupid argument. Private trash companies have been screwing residents over for years with horrible service. And it’s ridiculous that multiple trash trucks go through the same neighborhoods each week. So wasteful. I couldn’t believe trash wasn’t handled by the county - it’s a clear public good. |
False. The companies already compete with each other. |
|
I don’t know why so many people think this is going to be more efficient. We love our trash company and will be shocked if a centralized system with this bureaucratic county is going to run smoother.
We currently get two trash pick ups per week and one recycling and yard waste. I can’t imagine we will receive the same level of service. |
This is such a dumb comparison. Our county rec center is beautiful with an indoor pool, turf fields, indoor courts and meeting spaces. My kids are members of planet fitness and you have a bunch of equipment loaded into one room, a bathroom and that's about it. |
I lived in DC for most of my life and trash pick-up was only an issue during the Barry years. I loved that we also had bulk pick-up. |
Even LA Fitness is cheaper than the REC centers. Fairfax county libraries and government buidings already have meeting spaces. Duplicating existing services is not an efficiency of scale. For most people, the basic weight equipment is all they want. But we need to subsidize other other users who need an ice rink and rock wall. |
