I just received a letter from our trash/recycling company about a proposed plan to "streamline" trash services. See also www.choice4ffx.org
There's not a lot of info on the site or in the letter other than doomsday predictions if this proposal passes. (FTR we switched to a small, local trash company a couple of years ago -vs. AAA or Republic etc.-and have been happy with them). Anyone know the scoop here? |
| Fairfax is planning to switch to a county-provided trash service, like Arlington's. As someone who has lived in both counties and currently in Fairfax has a private trash company while watching multiple trucks from multiple companies drive on our street almost every day of the week, it seems like a reasonable idea to me. They should figure out how do it quickly though instead of in a decade. |
| I would vastly prefer FFX county provided trash. Right now there are trash collections Mon-Sat and usually two different trucks on each day. |
|
You want to give up your choice and put your trust in government?
Seriously??? Have you noticed who is the head of our government at the moment?? Just say NO! to this proposal. |
This sounds like a terrible idea. |

Fairfax County is going to create a new administrative department that will contract for resident services county wide. This will involve a new bureaucracy to administrate the contracts on top of an existing trash fee paid on your real estate taxes.

No one is getting trash pickup for $12/year. |
| I am totally happy with Fairfax doing this. Wish they had done it years ago. All the local residential trash companies are rip offs. |
You believe that Fairfax County is going to get the best price or be capable of ensuring the contractors aren't shirking? |
Fairfax county will REALLY rip you off, and you won’t have any choice. |
|
I’ve lived all over the country and Fairfax County is the only place I’ve lived that has private trash pick up. County/city provided trash pick up has been more than fine in every other place we’ve lived.
It’s dumb and annoying to have so many different companies doing a job that the county could do. |
This. Same here. And it is not helpful to have trash trucks back and forth on my street 6 days a week (because different companies pick different days for our area). I already can watch Fairfax County do a better job with the trash pickup one block away from my house than any of the private companies are doing. So there is an existence proof the county can do a better job. We live near the edge of one of the existing county trash pickup areas. |
| Of course your trash/recycling company things its a doomsday scenario, they will actually be accountable to someone and won't be allowed to skip random days, charge exorbitant fees for bulk pickup, etc., they're going to be regulated. In my view, this is a GREAT thing, we've tried three different waste companies over the years and they've all been terrible. |
100% We moved from an area with county serviced waste and recycling to one with a private company and I preferred the county service, it was so much better. Our current company doesn't even do bulk pickup. We're hesitant to switch to another company because our entire neighborhood uses the same company so we're worried a new company would miss us. |
When we had county service, it was a nominal fee through our Fairfax Water bill. We did not pay a separate bill and it definitely wasn't the $200/quarter we pay now. |
| Haha, it looks like the waste management lobby is out in full force this morning!!! It's so obvious when someone from one of these companies or the lobbying firm they hired comes on here and starts posting. |
