The First Black Pope

Robert Francis Prevost, the Chicago-born cardinal selected on Thursday as the new pope, is descended from Creole people of color from New Orleans.

The pope’s maternal grandparents, both of whom are described as Black or “mulatto” in various historical records, lived in the city’s Seventh Ward, an area that is traditionally Catholic and a melting pot of people with African, Caribbean and European roots.

The grandparents, Joseph Martinez and Louise Baquié, eventually moved to Chicago in the early 20th century and had a daughter: Mildred Martinez, the pope’s mother.

The discovery means that Leo XIV, as the pope will be known, is not only breaking ground as the first U.S.-born pontiff. He also comes from a family that reflects the many threads that make up the complicated and rich fabric of the American story.

According to the one drop rule (created by white people) - the first American Pope - is BLACK.

He also named himself after the Pope who condemned slavery.

I am here for this!

I wonder if they did that on purpose.

I LOVE THIS FOR JD VANCE AND MAGA!

Why does the left need to make everything political? I am Catholic, conservative, and very happy about the new Pope for many reasons. I found the background that you posted very interesting. You should stopped before making it into a political dig at the people with whom you disagree.

And it turns out race isn't a big deal to people anymore.

No actual black person thinks he is black.

His family should just take a DNA test. I would find that more interesting than anything the OP is saying.

What does a DNA test have anything to do with anything. They claimed black.

Are you asking what does DNA have to do with identifying racial background?

What?

Sounds American to me. God knows what we are. I saw a survey prototype for tracking peoples race and ethnicity. It had several African heritages in addition to Black American. Then when it got to the European section there was no place for "White American". I mean seriously it's not like I've got my heritage worked out. I'm 1/8 Norwegian 1/16 Lakota Sioux. Pennsylvania Dutch or whatever the ones with the White surname were. They only listed European ethnicities. This was under the Biden admin. Like hey, white Americans have the same issues black Americans have in terms of heritage. Like we're all over the place mixing. My kids are half Chinese, but you can't tell it.

Have you seen a picture of the man? You need a dna test to tell you he is not 100% white?

Bless your heart.

Very retro.

MAGA cares a lot. If they didn't, there would not be an all out attack on black and brown people.

I know black people who I would swear are white, identify as black.

You clearly have no idea how many black people there are who don't look black.

Eh, this is not so cut and dry. Some people like OP believe in the "one drop" rule. I don't. I think black is a color or a set of facial features. I don't think being of African or slave descent necessarily gives you those features so you can be 1/5 African but not be black IMO.

That's the thing though. Your opinion doesn't particularly matter. Each person decides for themselves. It sounds like this family doesn't identify as Black. My family is Black Creole. My father is a blue-eyed blonde-haired man who has always identified as Black because his family has always identified as Black. Most white people assume my father is white until he says otherwise. The Pope doesn't identify as Black, and he has not lived his life as a Black man, so idk why a bunch of white folks are rushing to try to claim him as Black for us.

Just goes to show you none of these distinctions are real. Once you get to trying to categorize people that exist at the margins, all the definitions cease to really make sense. The guy is not really Black, but he's also not really white.

I agree. This should be a joyful moment where we celebrate the first American pope. The makeup of his DNA is an interesting point of discussion, but it doesn't seem respectful to be publicly lecturing him about who he is. Let's just be happy that one of our countrymen has ascended to arguably the most powerful position in the world.

I was at a Catholic youth event today, and there was such joy everytime our new pope was mentioned. The kids are thrilled! There’s genuine joy and happiness around this new moment for the church.

That said, it’s incredibly frustrating that so many non-Catholics are trying to make him a pawn in American left-right politics. Just stop. Let us have our moment of joy with him.
