So it turns out that we got our first black pope.
Robert Francis Prevost, the Chicago-born cardinal selected on Thursday as the new pope, is descended from Creole people of color from New Orleans. The pope’s maternal grandparents, both of whom are described as Black or “mulatto” in various historical records, lived in the city’s Seventh Ward, an area that is traditionally Catholic and a melting pot of people with African, Caribbean and European roots. The grandparents, Joseph Martinez and Louise Baquié, eventually moved to Chicago in the early 20th century and had a daughter: Mildred Martinez, the pope’s mother. The discovery means that Leo XIV, as the pope will be known, is not only breaking ground as the first U.S.-born pontiff. He also comes from a family that reflects the many threads that make up the complicated and rich fabric of the American story. According to the one drop rule (created by white people) - the first American Pope - is BLACK. He also named himself after the Pope who condemned slavery. I am here for this! It sounds like Pope Leo XIV has a wonderful background that will support his ability to connect on a personal level with a wide variety of people throughout the world.

The new pope is going to be dragged in American cultural wars on every front.
His family should just take a DNA test. I would find that more interesting than anything the OP is saying. |

Is the “Left” educated enough to show awareness of historical precedents? Yes. Especially those of us who were irrevocably impacted by such precedents. There are actually very few genuine “Leftists “ in the US — not nearly enough to allow for generalizations about their current stance on social constructs. |

In an interview, when his brother was asked if he knew about their black heritage, he denied it.
Not sure how one doesn’t know that their grandparents are people of color, but….. if the pope had known and vocalized his African-American heritage he would’ve never been named Pope. |

The thought crossed my mind that you could also have a Jewish pope in this manner. What I mean is a catholic pope of hidden Jewish heritage.

People get excited by representation. In this case it’s an American pope. One day it will be a black pope - I expect from Africa before America, but who knows. |
