The fact the homeowner is in jail still is kinda mind blowing.

I don’t see this as a racial issue at all. I’m white. The homeowner here is morally right and I hope the law agrees. If someone is lurking around my home banging on doors or windows at 3am they probably won’t like what’s coming to them either. I don’t care about their skin color.

No, he is not. He is morally (and legally) in the wrong. The homeowner in DC was debatable. This one is not.

You know nothing yet of the actual facts and are moralizing on rumor. The other teen claims they were just ringing the doorbell and were running away - likely a lie but there is video so the truth should come out.

If he shot the kid in the back, then he's in the wrong. If they were menacing him it'll go the other way.

Sad regardless.

Grand jury no-bill.

Rules are often different at night, more leeway for property owners defending their property, and being on property that is not yours doing criminal mischief at night, is a sure fire way to get a Darwin Award.

Same. White, strongly dislike guns and don't own one, all for gun control, liberal Dem etc. But if someone were doing this to me and found themselves on the toothy end of my German Shepherd well...FAFO. the homeowner is right here.

Which is not a wild assumption at 3am. But.. you can't shoot someone in the back either, as that's not self defense.

Not sure about VA law, but in many states you can if you think they are making off with property, or are possibly committing arson.

You shoot someone in the back, you go to jail.

If only that rule applied to Cops and Military.

Well, if it was the other way around I’m sure there would already be rioting.

Ring my doorbell at 3am and it's a FAFO situation for sure.

How can they be trying to break in if they are ringing the door bell? That’s… not what breaking in is…

It sure as hell is if you are ringing the doorbell to get the person to come to the door and then you force your way in when they do.

The actual facts, more of which are probably not in the short article, are what matter. In Virginia you can shot someone if you think your life is in imminent danger. If a group of male teens are banging on my door, on my porch, trespassing on my property, and not leaving right away, what else do I think theyre there to do but break in.

I had teens at 4am come into my fenced in yard, wander around, high out of their mind. My bedroom is in the front of the house, they woke me up, I looked out the window, opened the window and yelled I was calling the police. They ran. If they were banging on the door over and over, or ringing the doorbell repeatedly, I would definitely get scared. People act like 911 comes right away, if they even answer at all.

But you shouldn’t open the door to shoot them. If you truly are in fear of your life, you grab your gun but keep the doors shut and locked, then shoot if they come in.

I don’t have much sympathy for someone who goes outside and then claims they shot in self defense. Someone’s at my door, I grab my kids, call the police, lock ourselves in the bathroom, and shoot only if they try to come into the bathroom after I’ve shouted I’m armed.

.. and then they’re out terrorizing someone else the very next night. Or maybe even later the same night.

No where does any article say he shot the kid in the back nor does it say he opened the door and shot them. WE DONT KNOW. why do posters just make up facts? You’re making stuff up.

And in Virginia, you don’t have to give a warning.

I think the homeowner was in the right. I'm a woman and I do keep a loaded gun in my hall closet.

How do you confirm that a house is empty before you break in?

You knock persistently "as a prank" to see if anyone comes out.

And the way they did where we used to live, is that when you opened the door, they stormed in, tied you up and stole everything they could. They would do this during the day and have some fake reason for ringing the bell.

I think this type of “prank” of deliberately waking people up when they’re sleeping peacefully in their own homes be considered criminal mischief with a two strikes as misdemeanor and the third occurrence is a felony with mandatory prison time. And the criminal mischief should involve anything, not just the door knocking or ringing. No plea deals allowed. We need zero tolerance. The parents obviously aren’t raising these kids so society needs to do it. And fine the parents at the same time for neglecting their parental responsibilities.
