I am 49 and I used to be tired in the evenings but I could function if needed; recently I had maybe 2-3 days spread out over the course of about a year where all I could do in the evening was lie on the couch. Like if someone told me get up and do the dishes I would die, thats how i felt.
All these bouts were after a long stressful week with lack of sleep. i also have seasonal increases in work activity and they get harder and harder for me every year. It’s very noticeable. So yes I’d say it’s “normal” unfortunately. |
| How do you manage an hour of a highly intense workout when you are exhausted? |
It depends. If you are at sedentary job, it is not normal to be exhausted by 6 PM. If you work in an overstimulating environment like a school or the emergency room, it isn’t unusual. If you work a manual labor type job, it isn’t unusual. |
This was me. At 55- I finally feel better. I haven’t had a period since November and my energy is up for the first time in ages! I added a 1 hour walk in the evening (even if I exercised earlier in the day). I work full time- but only one kid at home (HS junior, other in college). I think the mid 40s are peak stress levels and busy life. |
My sedentary job leaves me so tired - 3-4pm exhausted. It’s the sitting and lack of moving. |
| Sedentary or school teacher - if your exhaustion is mental, that is one thing. But physical exhaustion - to the point where you have to lie down and sleep - is another. Try walking a bit after work. If you can do it and you feel better, then it is mental. If not, its physical and go to the doctor. |
| Teaching is physically and mentally exhausting. Most of us don’t sit down and often shove food down our mouths too fast if we even eat. My mom was a teacher and sometimes comes into school to volunteer. She said she would mostly teach from her desk and that wasn’t unusual. The behavior of the students made it possible. She didn’t have a thousand meetings and trainings during her planning and lunchtime. She got her grading done at school. No planning since they taught from teacher’s manuals then. |
| Oh and the first thing I did when I got home on Friday was take a nap. I woke up four hours later at 8:30pm. I ate some soup and then slept for 11 more hours. It’s not a job for older people anymore. |
I have this question too. I have POTS and am exhausted all the time. I cannot walk a block without needing to stop and take a break because I'm so fatigued and dizzy. So maybe you have POTS, but it doesn't totally make sense to me that you can work out hard for an hour each day but you're also exhausted all the time. I'm not saying I doubt you! I'm saying I can't square those things. If you have POTS, you're exhausted all the time, from my experience, not just at the end of a long day. |
OP is not talking about 2-3 days per year. She's saying every day. Being exhausted every day is not normal. Yes of course being exhausted 2-3 days per year is fine. |
You get started. Even at my most exhausted--I always feel better afterwards. You give it 10 minutes and go from there. I have worked out 6 days a week (even during pregnancy) my entire life. Go for a walk outside minimum... |
+1 Sounds like depression or verge of a breakdown If not depression, undetected cancer exhaustion. |

Try daily:
Iron pill Super B-complex with Vitamin C D3 vitamin Magnesium This and consistent sleep hygiene got my energy back up. |
OP is already exercising strenuously an hour a day; they don't need advice on how to do that. The question you felt the need to answer was looking for details from. OP |
With enough calories? |
