The implementation has been delayed but once it starts, you are probably going to have to show your French passport to the airline at IAD to explain why you don't need to apply for an ETIAS, else they may not let you on the plane. The EU didn't have ETIAS last year, 10 years ago or twenty years ago, but they will soon.The UK ETA started this year and similar systems have been in place for Australia and NZ and Canada for a while.

I will still need ETIAS because I am dual with Ireland. British duals will need it too.

OP back to your originals question I travel internationally monthly, actually up to twice monthly since January. No problems. EU I go in on my Irish. Asia I go in on the one with the shortest line. Always back on my American.

Were you driving?

I thought EU citizens needed a Canada ETA to fly into Canada, but that US citizens do not. Rules are different for driving.

I am dual citizen with France. I am not OP so I didn’t write anything at the top of the thread. And the U.K. isn’t part of the EU so my situation is completely irrelevant to what is confusing for U.K. dual citizens. Also if Air France wants to know why I don’t need a visa, voila I have my French passport so what’s the big deal?! I don’t get why you’re taking over this thread with your random what if’s.

You should avoid travel in to or out of the US. If you have to travel scrub your social media feeds, text chain and email for anything negative about Trump, republicans, Israel, antiChristian, pro EVs, etc.

CBP can and will demand you unlock your phone and computer for search. If you refuse you will be denied entry to the country.

I was traveling over spring break and people were deleting all their apps and text before going through customs. These were American citizens.

Well if you are a democrat or independent you should be in fear. People like you are targeting them. Trump is arresting and deporting people with no due process. They do not even ask to see your papers. There are US citizens in El Salvador prisons.

US border police are harassing Canadian crossing the border and Canadians have been warned by the elected officials not to travel to the US. If you are democrat or independent it is risky to leave the country. Specially if you attended a protest. It’s not fear monger just common sense.

I do wonder about which passport to travel on. Our second country wants you to travel there on their passport (returning to the US on the US passport), but it seems like traveling on different passports for different legs could trip wires?

Didn't for me. I have US/German citizenship. Germany does not want you entering on a US passport if you are German (IME), so I use that one. Used US on exit. I never met or saw a live agent on either end as I used Global Entry coming home and in Germany you just scan to go through with an EU passport.

I was just in the completely packed Dulles passport control. No one was sitting deleting things. Everyone was going through just like normal from lots of different flights. I used MPC and my foreign colleagues were in the regular line. It was easy and didn't see anyone being pulled aside.

Whatever. I am on a visa and am crossing the border all the time, as are millions of other people, without incident. I wouldn’t come to the US on vacation at the moment, and I would be terrified if I were eg active in support of Palestine, but I don’t think most people need to worry overly.

In my social circle, it's only the internationals who travel for work that are actively crossing borders right now. No one I know on a visa is vacationing outside the US. They might (and we might) if one of our parents had a life or death emergency, something like that. But no crossing borders for fun stuff. It's just not worth the risk.

Yeah but that's the point- they don't have to do stuff like this very much. It can instill fear in people and they decide to just leave or not come back, this kind of thing is too risky if it happens to you. That's their goal.

I know someone on a visa like this- it's a work visa that has no renewal limit. So many people do indeed stay in the US for years, meet someone, rent an apartment, etc. All very natural things and completely legal. They do all this because they reasonably expect to be able to renew the work visa on the proscribed schedule. Day-to-day it's not a concern. But these visas say that they are not supposed to have "immigrant intent", meaning you can't, at the time of applying or renewing, intend to eventually settle in the US as your permanent home. You can be asked to show that you still have ties at home- bank accounts, voting records, family, etc. This guy made a "mistake" because he said "I live in the US", using understandable colloquial language. He has a partner he lives with, they have an apartment he sleeps in probably 350 nights a year, a full-time job in the US, etc.

But the CBP officer chose to interpret that as "I intend to make the US my permanent residence", probably because he decided he didn't like him for some reason. He just has to write that as the justification on the form, and it's done, legally.
