Prayers for the child.

My little sister had a friend in 4th grade die of leukemia and it was horrific. A few days before she passed she told her mom and dad not to worry. She told them to cherish their time here with each other and her sister and that she would see them on the other side. She was dying and what was on her mind was her family's mental health. This was 35 years ago and it still puts tears down my face. She was 9.

Honestly, these stories are not helpful.

Agree

Two Karens in one thread. What are the odds?

Good try but A Karen is not empathetic. OP is worried about a friend‘s child’s chances with beating leukemia and this PP posts a Debbie downer story about the only kid they know with leukemia dying. The PP wants to be the main character.

Sounds like you want to be the main character

A childrens hospital today diagnosed AML leukemia. I'm not sure if they could test bone marrow or tissue same day, so I'm not sure if this is a preliminary diagnosis or for certain. Parents are devastated but hopeful.

Friend is not sure how to coordinate a second opinion on best treatment, and from where. Does the current hospital oncologist reach out to a facility or doctor of parent's choice at their request? And where/who would be best to chose for it? Who is the best for children's leukemia?

Children's Fairfax for a second opinion if there is time. A good friend's son was treated there and considering the circumstances had a good experience. He is ok now.

I'm glad to hear he's ok now. They just took the biopsy today, will take 2 weeks for pathology or genetics, but they want to start chemo immediately on Monday. Port was surgically inserted today. Crazy how fast this is happening. They may get 2nd opinion when test results come back.

A friend’s child was diagnosed with leukemia 20 years ago, did chemo etc., and is doing great today. There is hope.

FWIW, my 85 year old mother was just diagnosed with AML and her treatment seems to be working (for now).

Scroll down to the pediatric cancers section.

As with any health thing, a fabulous hospital may not be the best hospital for a particular condition, but some good ideas here. some of them will be able to assess virtually and possibly have partner hospitals closer to home. What i mean is, for example, boston children's can do a virtual appointment and use the tests/info already done to provide an opinion. A friend's child is currently under their care, but able to do chemo closer to home, with occasional trips to boston for check ups.

Bawling. So wise beyond her years.

Yes and not uncommon. The research has shown that children, even very young children who are dying are very aware of their parents deep pain and fear and often work hard to try to comfort and reassure them or minimize their own pain and fear. Op, praying for your friend's child, may they have a really good outcome.

Especially given the reality that the most common childhood leukemia is now, for the most part, a curable disease.

Posters like this are thoughtless.

It's acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

They did chemo, spinal tap or marrow was then negative, decided to go for second round of chemo, suddenly she has infected port, sepsis, and low oxygen and double pneumonia and she is on a ventilator. Been 2 days. No flu or covid was mentioned. This is awful.

Praying for your friend’s child. May God bless them and offer comfort in those horrible times. I wish I could do more. So very sorry.

I second contacting Boston Children's Hospital for a second opinion. You can submit it online.

But tell your friend to call her insurance company for guidance. My plan includes ambassadors for certain diseases to coordinate care and get 2nd and 3rd opinions for treatments and/or surgery.

sending prayers for this child!
