This is what I don’t understand about the gloaters either. If the city suffers an economic decline due to federal government cuts, the suburbs go down with it. The suburbs here are thriving because of the presence of the government. I have to assume that the gloaters are just outsiders who hate the whole region for being liberal (who also will suffer economically if their country’s capital does, but they can’t wrap their heads around that apparently).

MD and VA drivers finally getting around to paying their traffic fines - which they’ve collectively accumulated while speeding and otherwise recklessly driving through DC neighborhoods - would fully cover this deficit.

Lots of poor D.C. residents ride bikes, too, but apparently cooks and busboys commuting to work are invisible to you.

Most poor ride the bus or take Metro. They are not the ones in cycling suits on the bike lanes.

One would think that someone so obsessed with cyclists in DC would actually know something about them. After living in DC for decades, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone in Lycra using a bike lane.

These comments are mostly unserious. However, some have correctly pointed out--this is going to effect the whole region, not just DC. So similar revenue downturns in MD and VA for example. Clearly there will have to be strategic spending cuts--but where those cuts will be is up for debate. And as others have mentioned it will likely get worse once the federal gov't makes its own additional spending cuts to finance the huge tax cut that Trump and his cult want. My main suggestion would be to make cuts in areas that "incentivize" people getting a job rather than relying on public benefits. Means testing, anyone?

This can't be said enough. Americans who hate "cities" really just hate the crime, and graffiti and weed smoke, and so forth. None of those things are inherent in a city.
