Right. You’ll see leadership positions posted first. I saw a couple today. The advantage of waiting for the job fair is you get to see all your options. |
| I see some jobs popping up |
That's a year from now though. Tax revenue from FY 24 are already locked in |
| bump |
We are currently in FY25 and budgeting for FY26. When tax revenues crater they will have to put a savings plan into place for county government. This means furloughs and service cuts. Not sure when MCPS will be cut, but it will. |
| What will be cut first?? |
Here is what happened in 2010: https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/furloughs-upset-police-fire-in-montogmery-county/1869342/ |
I don't expect layoffs, I expect hiring freezes ,bigger classes and no COLA/steps. This is what our building rep said was being floated. |

I think the part that isn't being discussed fully here is that this isn't st all like 2010.
Federal funding will be cut and the state won't be in a position to compensate for the lost funds. Also, we are likely to see a declining population of school aged children because of families leaving the area. Finally, property tax income will be greatly reduced because of declining home values as people moving away start selling. In 2010 we dealt with the side effects of a recession that hit hardest elsewhere, by 26-27 we are all but guaranteed to be having to make much harder choices for MCPS. As I choose if/where to I transfer I am thinking about what schools and programs are likely to be most impacted. |
The other piece is that the MOE law has been made more restrictive. It is very very difficult legally for the county to reduce MCPS funding. That doesn't mean there won't be cuts - with growing healthcare and pension costs you need to constantly increase finding above inflation to maintain services - but it does mean the county government's budget will be quite dire |

Looks like the cuts will come sooner than I thought

These people are idiots. They should have been developing contingency plans or directing LEAs to make cuts the minute Trump got into office. MCPS specifically ignored people who advised them to prepare for precisely this moment. |
