Sounds amazing!

Indeed! Too bad Ben and Jerry’s refuses cash. Who else is as stupid?

Because no one in the entire history of the world was fired from a job. You are so special, so unique, of course you are terrified. Those wusses who saw their children blown apartment by an IEP or their house leveled by a fire or flood have no patch on the true terror in which you live.

The world is not some kind of pain Olympics - we don't have to minimize the pain and suffering of one group for another who suffers more. With that kind of logic almost no one is deserving of support. We can help and be empathetic in both situations.

Petty. You have no idea about her finances but you can look up her salary. The GS levels are not high paying. She either inherited money, married well, or invested well. You are not a very good friend. Hope she knows you are a petty, little whiny B.

+1. You can look up any federal employee's salary history. If they are earning more than $150K a year then it's a pretty good bet that they are in law or tech and could earn far more in the private sector.

In other words, for the first time in your life, you understand what it’s like to be a private sector employee?

No sympathy. None.

I'm a private sector employee and yes, our companies go through RIFs. However, they are not machetes to thousands of people in large swaths. Additionally, corporate RIFs typically include severance, perhaps job counseling, perhaps the ability to look for a new role in the same company. And let's not forget. Thousands of Feds hitting the unemployment market simultaneously, plus contractors who are now unemployed because their contracts were cut, plus academics who's federal grants covering their research or teaching salaries becoming unemployed is a very different situation than a few companies laying off. This is a mass unemployment catastrophe that is not easily absorbed by the job market. Have some empathy. Wanting others to experience your pain as a "welcome to my world" means you're soul-less.

+1. We don’t even need to talk about the ripple effects all this devastation is going to cause on the broader economy. If you work for any business that sells things, I’d be very concerned.

Consumer spending down in January. If you look at stocks of large companies that bended the knee like Target and Amazon numbers are down since inauguration. Different for companies that resist like Costco, they are up. It's working people.

It would be a symbolic day to cancel recurring charges, Amazon Prime, food delivery accounts, and close online social media accounts like X, Facebook, TikTok or any others you still have, cancel credit cards you don't need. Shut it all down.

Use cash as often as possible.

Funny how that works out.

I've stopped spending since Jan 20th. We bought most things that we need to replace before then.

No trips planned. No travel planned. Only food and bills. We will use cash to pay small farmers at the farmers market when we go.

I'm cutting my hair at home and also learned how to cut my dh's hair.

F the economy.

How unbelievably noble of you, PP. I cannot imagine the sacrifice you must be making.

Huh?
You don’t think it’s prudent to be extra thrifty if you may lose your job soon?

Thrifty, yes. Terrified, no. DCUM has said that Feds are so important and valuable that they should easily be able to find another job as millions of other people have done when they lose a job.

As an FYI, go toward the end of the farmer's market. The farmer's are either giving away or deeply discounting food. I go to several to collect vegetables, especially, for the feeding program at our church.

Private industry is slashing jobs, too. No one will be working at this rate.

Your premise is inaccurate though. The rust belt lost jobs because demand for the labor had disappeared. That’s not the case here. Congress has charged the executive with implementing a variety of laws and th president is saying “no” and that’s just not how our Constitution works.

The work that Congress has mandated still needs to be accomplished.
