I'm not participating in the economy much now, since I am terrified about being fired at any minute, as a Fed.
In other words, for the first time in your life, you understand what it’s like to be a private sector employee? No sympathy. None.
I'm a private sector employee and yes, our companies go through RIFs. However, they are not machetes to thousands of people in large swaths. Additionally, corporate RIFs typically include severance, perhaps job counseling, perhaps the ability to look for a new role in the same company. And let's not forget. Thousands of Feds hitting the unemployment market simultaneously, plus contractors who are now unemployed because their contracts were cut, plus academics who's federal grants covering their research or teaching salaries becoming unemployed is a very different situation than a few companies laying off. This is a mass unemployment catastrophe that is not easily absorbed by the job market. Have some empathy. Wanting others to experience your pain as a "welcome to my world" means you're soul-less.
+1. We don’t even need to talk about the ripple effects all this devastation is going to cause on the broader economy. If you work for any business that sells things, I’d be very concerned.
