Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| It looks like a 40% chance of precipitation and it won’t start until 9 pm. |
| A delay or closure would be a Taylor's own peril. He'd have lots of angry fed parents on his hands. |
If it's icy, there will 100% be a delay or closure. |
And Taylor would be ensuring his tenure at MCPS is short-lived. And without McKnight's buyout. |
Not at all. Most parents are understanding of closures due to ice.
|
+1 That was a dumb take. |
I don't understand this... If it is safe for families and child care workers to reach the school, why isn't it safe to have school? |
| The temperature is supposed to rise tomorrow. If ice in the morning, I predict a delay rather than closing |
Let's see if the ice verifies and how bad the roads are before making ridiculous claims like this one. The last thing you want to do is jeopardize the safety of staff and students. And, yes, ice is bad enough to jeopardize people's safety. Luckily it is a short loved storm. Some of you would never had made it around here in 1994. |
The reason or excuse for closing schools is usually related to buses or kids that have to walk a long way to their school. The calculus for child care is different (especially when most workplaces are open and operating normally) |
I didn't start this thread, but I'm on meteorological forums, where they can see weather events coalescing 10 days ahead of time. At that range, nothing is certain, but they're all weather fanatics and like to follow and discuss the various computer models as they come in, several times a day. It's rather hilarious, because in the famous DC snow hole, we see snow threaten a week out, everyone on the met forum starts rejoicing (they all love snow), and then the rug gets pulled from under our feet as the snow goes north. Or sometimes south. Never straight to DC, except in rare circumstances. We get rain. You have no idea how many snow events profile themselves on the horizon every single winter, only to fizzle out for our region. Being an amateur meteorologist and snow lover in this area is an exercise in frustration
And then the whole thing starts all over again in the summer, when we follow hurricane threats forming off the coast of Africa and wind their way to the Gulf or the east coast. None of us want severely damaging canes killing people and livelihoods, obviously, but there's a distinct aura of thrill-seeking on those discussion boards. Anyway. That's why before potentially dangerous weather events, one of us geeks will go on DCUM a few days out to give you a heads up. |
I'm confused. This thread is about Thursday. Today is Wednesday and there is freezing rain and potential "icing" predicted tonight and tomorrow morning. So the risk still appears to be there? |
Yes. Risk still there. |
PP you replied to. Freezing rain is the hardest to model and predict. Most of our models do not actually measure freezing rain separately (because that's very hard to do). They add in sleet and rain as well, which in a wintry mix situation like we're about to have in the metro region, can throw off freezing rain totals SIGNIFICANTLY. Looking at models right now, there seems to be a meaningful period of freezing rain. But is it really all going to freeze? Will it actually lead to ice accumulation on roads and sidewalks, which yesterday were very warm? Will it just be a nice picturesque coating on tree branches? Further west, it's an ice storm warning, and those guys will definitely see ice and are at risk for power outages because of accumulation on tree branches and power lines. But closer to DC... eh. It might all turn into rain. So we don't know, PP. The risk is there, and since ice is the deadliest winter event, if there's a risk of ice, public institutions have to prioritize safety. And if ice does not materialize on roads, they will get excoriated by the public. So from a public relations standpoint, this is a nightmare. I'm so glad I'm not the one making that call!!!
Just plan to avoid being on the road during the night, starting from 10pm in the immediate DC area, and pay close attention to ice reports tomorrow morning before you get into your car or walk your kid out the door. Prepare for a possible 2hr school delay. |
| Can someone tell me how many days are built in snow makeup days for MCPS? It has already extended half day on 6/16 which my kids are already enrolled in camps. With the forecast, it may be snowing or freezing rain next week. I hope MCPS will get exemption for make up. |
