Did your T5 early admit apply to any more schools?

Weirdly one kid at our school also applied to Michigan. Don't know why - think kid wants to go to Michigan and parents want HYPSM.

Maybe the parents thought the M stood for Michigan

yes, admitted to Stanford. Didn’t apply anywhere else after finding out. He had already applied to Oxford and Science Po.

Can always withdraw their applications. That’s what mine did after he was accepted REA to Stanford. And of course didn’t submit any other apps.

Getting into one of HYPSM SCEA and then applying to the rest for sh#ts and giggles is the definition of a d#ck move. The better private schools discourage trophy hunting since it harms everyone else in the class. Not sure what private school this is, but I'd suggest keeping this move under wraps. The other families will despise you.

But what if it's not trophy hunting?

Who is applying early to both MIT and Yale except the trophy hunters?

No one. You can't apply early to MIT AND Yale

And what if they are doing it because they are looking for aid? I have seen wildly different aid packages from different Ivy+ schools.

I would do what you need to do for your family and not worry about all these other cranky private school families.

Yes, but he is now leaning towards Oxford after REA at Stanford….

but that's ok under SCEA and REA - you can apply to publics at the same time.

I think you are confusing REA/SCEA with ED. One signs the contract for ED. I've never heard of a public or private school requiring a contract for SCEA. If OP is talking about ED, then continuing to apply to other schools is a dick move.

But he should already know if accepted to Oxford, which you would have said above if true. The interviews are mid-December and notices received mid-January.

^^ unless he received a conditional offer from Oxford and doesn't know if he can make the conditions like 3APs at 5.

I am definitely not confusing REA/SCEA with ED. I just went through this process and am very familiar with it. And one of the reasons I mention the policy of our private school -- one most people on this board would know -- is to underline that in fact some schools have a policy that forbids students accepted early to HYPSM from applying elsewhere in RD.

OP here. I’m referring to SCEA/REA/EA, not ED. DC did not enter any kind of contract with the college or their high school. They are also not trophy hunting - the 2 other schools to which they applied have more commonalities with the early school than differences (i.e. this is not a kid applying to both MIT and Yale). Anyway, it was interesting to hear various opinions on this topic!

This is definitely a public vs. private school thing. It is considered extremely selfish and gauche to do this at most of the top privates. Schools discourage it, and classmates will not react well if they find out. A lot of top public school kids shotgun top 10 schools or need to compare aid packages. This isn’t true at private school where the parents are already paying $55,000 a year.

I know of 2 kids who did this. Different cities, different privates and different years. One got into Yale early and the other got into Princeton. Both picked Harvard RD. One lost friends because of this. She went to a small private in NYC and everyone was mad at her. She ended up getting into every school she applied to. Her BSF from HS also got into Harvard but they no longer talk because of this.

The top schools are all competing to get certain students.
