You think the strategy is to give the parents no time to call the school so they give scores the day before winter break?

Well, there is something twisted about holding onto the information for so long. Yes, parents can provide referrals, but they are time-consuming, and I might prefer to save my additional information in case of an appeal. These computer-based test scores should not be so slow to come out. When administered online, CogAT scores are available immediately or within a few days (including "norming"). Any additional time to process is based on FCPS internal procedures and policies.

How do you even make it through the day? I hope you’re setting aside a few minutes to eat in between writing that half page of information. Strength to you, sister!

Wtf? It is definitely time consuming if you're doing it right!

+1. It's easier than a private school application, but still requires thought and work to come up with specific examples of GBRS and HOPE-linked traits in the parent paragraph, then 5 other examples in the parent questionaire, and then have your kid write up a small description of 2 work samples that fit neatly on a 2 PDF pages with everything being readable.

This is why we kept a running log of examples on our phones for about six months prior. We included a short reminder of anything that struck us as particularly creative/out of the norm. I also kept a pile of things done at home for samples - comics written, math games made, etc. Made the actual assembly fairly quick and easy. It's only really onerous if you wait until the last minute.

Don't do the bolded. Just don't do it. Give the best presentation you can of your kid now, just like your AART should be trying to do. That way you hopefully don't have to appeal.

And FCPS will definitely wait until Friday before a break to release information where possible. They love giving AAP admissions information on the Friday right before spring break. To be fair, given that it's 6 teachers from a random school determining if your kid is in AAP or not, it's not fair for your school or central office to be flooded with calls about AAP status and appeals. And similarly given that central office does the in-pool numbers, it's not fair for say your kids' second grade teacher or the testing coordinator at your school to get complaints about the timing of the emails. So they try to minimize the possibility that people will call.

I disagree that they will wait until the Friday before winter break. When a child is in pool, I've seen that the AART will sometimes reach out to the parent to request a parent referral form as well, to put more information into the packet. They'll need to do that before Dec 15. If I had to guess, I think they'll release the COGAT scores tomorrow. Just my opinion - we shall see!

PP here. By kid 2 in the process we did something similar, and this is really good advice for anyone considering AAP referrals.

I can’t believe we still don’t have scores or in pool letters. The referral is due tomorrow.

It's exactly the same as last year.

I never spent any time on any of that. I figured if my kids belonged in AAP, it would be obvious through whatever our aart submitted for my child. I was correct.

NP and this was kinda my thought as well. Or maybe I'm just lazy and looking for an excuse to half a$$ the application...shrugs.

Glad I didnt have that thought. DC was 136/136 COGAT/NNAT, 99% on iReady's, 4s on all academic classes. Didnt make pool. GBRS and teacher submissions were pretty underwhelming. Glad we were able to supplement to show what DC was capable of at home (without help - though not sure if anyone believes it).

My kids thrived in the program and I don't regret one bit making their application as strong as possible. Our AART is excellent, but I would have been annoyed at myself if any of my kids were rejected and I felt like I hadn't put together a good packet.

Out AART was the one who told us to put together a referral packet.
