Villanova is much better (and more prestigious) than HC.

I’ve never heard Villanova referred to as prestigious!

It’s prestigious the way Northeastern is prestigious - on dubious grounds and only in the last 10 years.

At our high school, Northeastern is one of the top schools for the top students.

ooh, sorry about that

Snark at high school students must make you swell with pride, but to each his own.

So DH and I are from the Boston area and I have had classmates attend. It is a strong school, and it is one that I don’t think is inundated with applicants from the DMV. Their SAT range is also significantly lower than comparable schools if that is a factor. We were impressed, and they have some nice new facilities. Worcester isn’t great, but it is a college town and not far from Boston. If you are trying to identify a few schools that aren’t the usual suspects for this area, it might be worth looking at.

the high school students are blameless. It's the inane Northeastern boosters here who do everything to chime in about the most prestigious college in the northeast -- Northeastern!

What are you considering "comparable schools" to HC?

I'd compare HC to Colgate and Bucknell (fellow Patriot League schools), other New England liberal arts schools like Colby and Bates, plus Boston College (for the Jesuit connection and the fact that many extended families have grads of both schools).

You do realize the first to chime in about Northeastern was someone shading them.

Can't really believe people consider Northeastern prestigious. Probably the same people who think Tulane isn't because of US News methodology changes. I remember when US News wasn't woke and Northeastern was ranked #120 in the 2000s.

I grew up near HC and my late dad went there. It was venerated in our house for strong academics. My own DS was applying to northeastern LACs a few years ago and once of the things that stood out to me was that the Naviance for his HS showed only admits in very stats range. He got in elsewhere ED but I came away with the (perhaps wrong) impression that even if HC's overall admissions rate is not as competitive as the top LACs in New England, it may still be surprisingly tough to get into. Some of the PPs seem to support this. Maybe there's a strong Catholic school pipeline or something?

This forum is a lot better when the person who hates Northeastern (for whatever reason) tries to troll the school every chance they get. They pop up once in a while intentionally trying to derail perfectly normal conversations. It is absolutely wild the obsession this person has with Northeastern, rivaled only by the Michigan boosters and haters of UChicago.

I don't EVER speak about Northeastern on this website. Maybe once during the entire time I've been active. On "most overrated colleges" lists I always see Northeastern and think it just isn't that great a place. Sorry to you/your kid.

For what it is worth, HC has a lower admit rate on its 23-24 CDS (21%) than Villanova did on its (25%) and HC has a higher yield rate (45%) than Villanova (30%). Perhaps HC is a more particular category of institution than Villanova drawing a more self-selected group of applicants?

I think it's because they fill so much if their class in ED their RD admit rate us low - something like 16% last cycle.

I agree that HC is more self-selecting. I honestly think the name scares away kids who aren't Catholic even though it isn't any more religious than BC or Villanova.

Fair point.

True. Calling yourselves the "Crusaders" doesn't help either.

It's a solid school - I'm always impressed by HC graduates. (I live in CT and meet many.)
