College of the Holy Cross

Looking at holy cross as the likely plan B for Boston College after getting differed? What are everyone’s thoughts? Any for sure ED2?

My kids both liked it better than BC because they wanted a small school (and so didn't apply to BC). How do you feel about school size?

Holy Cross has one of the highest early decision acceptance rate of any school which offers ED, almost 70%. Even backing out for athletic recruits, it confers a huge advantage. With the usual pecking order, Notre Dame, BC, Villanova/Holy Cross, Providence College, it is a great EDII school if you had your sights set on BC.

If you're ready to ED, go for it! They take such a high percentage of their class ED that DD took it off her RD list.

I bet they take the majority of their ED admits in ED1 though.

Have you visited? It’s gorgeous! Seems like a lovely place for most kids.

Same.

Great backup, unless the location was a major part of the draw with BU. HC campus is gorgeous, and the social and academic environments will be comparable.

But the surrounding town has a lot less to offer. It’s fine, probably better than many small college towns, but will feel pretty limited if they were looking forward to being near the buzz of Boston.

(Sorry for the typo—meant to say BC, not BU.)

Does it feel more like a prestigious Catholic university (Georgetown/BC/ND/Villanova) or more like a prestigious LAC in the northeast (Amherst/Williams/Middlebury/Bucknell/Colgate)?

Neither, since it isn't prestigious. Has the layout and students of a liberal arts college, education of a catholic university.

Neither. Holy Cross isn’t prestigious, it is Holy Cross. It’s a decent school with a lot of smart but not brilliant Catholic students who like to party.

Villanova is not prestigious. Strong, but not prestigious. Georgetown, ND and arguably BC fall into that category.

As for Holy Cross, it is a very good school, but prestigious it is not. Holy Cross has a 67% ED acceptance rate.

511 out of 811 freshmen enrolled at Holy Cross applied ED.

Its SAT percentiles are okay, but not nearly at the level of the stronger Massachusetts schools, nor of its Catholic brethren
