Here’s Why Asian Americans Shifted Right by 9 points

The uncomfortable truth is that you CAN actually make it in America if you work hard and have strong family values and discipline. It's not a govt or societal problem, it is the fact that other groups besides Asians simply don't have the same traditions and values that Asians do. No one ever wants to take personal responsibility for their own outcomes, it must be because of white supremacy and inequality. It is just amazing how so many Asians can come here with nothing and in one generation produce offspring who have more wealth than the average American.

People need to fix themselves if they want equity. You can socially engineer being a good parent.

They need to understand the history and legacy of slavery in the US, and the level of discrimination that still exists towards Black Americans. If they hate DEI so much, maybe they should go to another country.

Maybe you should stop with your anti-Asian bias. The US is so racist it elected a black president ... twice!

You just can't stand the fact that much of what the left promulgates wrt DEI, equity and all of the other mumbo jumbo has gaping flaws. The fact that Asians have more wealth than even white people entirely blows up the narrative of white supremacy and oppression. At the end of the day, 95% of it comes down to personal responsibility these. That's just not palatable though for progressives.

I couldn’t really be bothered to follow that stuff, but what was the end result? They won their case, right?
Does Harvard have more Asian students now?

The result was more Asians distrusting Dems to support them.

lol I looked it up. The result was the exact same number of Asians. And the number went down at some of the other Ivies. Too funny.

Yup, I saw that at shook my head. My fellow Asians failed to see how they are treated like pawns for anti-AA proponents on the right.

Harris talked about working family issues.
She didn’t talk about DEI.
she didn’t talk about her identity. Like not at all.

It would be interesting to know whether the data included South Asian as well as East Asian Americans.

Not sure but here’s what happened in Edison, NJ.

Edison is a bit unique because most of the Indians who reside there are small business owners and probably voted that way due to inflation.

The funny thing is that with Trump's tarriffs, they will have even less business because so many of their goods are from India.

I work with a lot of SE Asians. Most can't vote because they aren't citizens, but the men definitely supported Trump over Harris. My read on this group (economists mostly from upper class Indian families or the equivalent in other SE Asian countries) is that these men don't find Trump's paternalism, misogyny, or racism objectionable because they are fairly similar and come from a culture there that's the norm.

I don't think this is universal to SE Asians but it's very true among the group I know well. The women are more liberal as a group but not as liberal as the assimilated Asian Americans I know.

I would expect majority-Asian districts to have a much higher percentage of recent Asian immigrants and naturalized citizens (as opposed to native citizens). I think this could heavily influence attitudes towards a character like Trump.

Asians are socially conservative, the ultra left turn of Democratic Party didn’t sit well with them.
Asians get hurt the most by DEI politics, this is a fact.
Asians are fiscally conservative and don’t like their money being taken by more taxes or inflation.
Asians got sick of being taken for granted by the Democrats who only prioritize Blacks and Latinos.
I could go on and on but there are the main reasons. Asians are a small minority though so I don’t think their numbers matter, that’s why Democrats didn’t care much for them.

Just no. SE Asia elected first woman president in 1960, after that there have been 4 women Presidents in all SE Asian countries. Now, show me the states for Europe and Americas.

“Upper Class” Indians are NOT okay with patriarchy, misogyny and racism. That in itself is a racist and gross statement.

Anonymous wrote:My analysis of precinct-level voting data in four major urban areas shows that the exit polls may actually be understating the degree to which Asian Americans shifted to the right. Using census data, I identified majority-Asian precincts in these areas and compared the Republican margin of victory (or loss) between the 2024 and 2020 elections. The results are much more stark: Majority-Asian precincts in New York City, for instance, saw a rightward shift of 31 percentage points. Precincts in Dallas and Fort Bend counties in Texas both saw rightward shifts between 17 and 20 points. And precincts in Chicago saw a 23-point shift to the right.

If the rightward shift among Asian American voters is real and significant, what is behind it?

When asked, neither APIAVote nor Asian Americans Advancing Justice were able to provide an explanation. But several Republican-leaning Asian American voters I spoke with were not surprised by the shift.

'Wrong side of brown’

Asian American voters also told me that they were turned off by the Democrats’ racial equity policies. The Democratic Party heavily leaned into racial equity following George Floyd’s death and the riots that followed in 2020. Democrats made bold promises to reduce racial disparities in economic and other outcomes, arguing that current racial disparities are the result of decades of systemic discrimination that must be addressed. However, race-conscious policies like affirmative action often ended up pitting Asian Americans against other minority groups. For many Asian Americans, they end up on the “wrong side of brown,” as Nomani puts it.

Noeth told me that Asian American parents were “fed up” with affirmative action policies in school admissions. Sue Ghosh Stricklett, a former Trump administration appointee, said the Harvard affirmative action case and the removal of merit-based admissions at Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia both “ignited passionate activism” among Asian American parents. In Fairfax County, Virginia, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology changed its merit-based admissions policy in a bid to “decrease the representation of Asian Americans” in favor of other racial minorities.

“The injustice of being labeled as ‘privileged,’ ‘selfish,’ ‘cheaters,’ ‘overrepresented,’ ‘white adjacent,’ and ‘resource hoarders’ hurt very deeply,” Nomani, who is also a parent of a Thomas Jefferson graduate, said. It led to “political mobilization and a reconsideration of long-standing political loyalties.”

Asian Americans are approximately 6% of US population and hardly sway elections by themselves.

The Chinese in particular were very discriminated against in the 1880s. They weren't allowed to testify in court cases in California (like Blacks and Native Americans), so there was a lot of violence against the Chinese that went unaccounted for. They weren't allowed to own mines. They were essentially forced labor to build the railroad and made to do the most dangerous jobs, so many died. They were so hated they're the first group that Congress specifically barred from being allowed to immigrate. From 1882 to 1943 they were prohibited from immigrating.

Did they have to overcome slavery? No. Were they able to overcome a lot in a relatively short period of time (1943 to 2024)? Yes. So maybe instead of saying they need to understand and respect the legacy, we should all take note that whatever they're doing works from a societal standpoint.

welp, looks like they don't need to since Americans voted in Trump. You might want to ponder why so many Asians, Hispanics, Blacks did not support Harris.

I'm not against DEI, per se, but the left got way too left on the issue. My spouse is a liberal, and even they said the left was going too far left.

We both voted for Harris.

There are a lot of people caught up in grievance politics, and outcome measures to them are surprisingly less relevant than having the right posturing.

+1 There was a SCOTUS case brought by a Chinese American to define what the 14th amendment meant. A Chinese American born was coming back into the country, and border officials said he wasn't a real American even though he was born in the US to immigrant parents who were here legally.

Unfortunately, the presidential nominee takes on the ideals of the party, and people saw how Dem were going to far left.
