I am not aware that ED data affects US News. Acceptance rate has not been included in the calculation for some years now. However, ED affects yield. Yield is included in US News ranking calculations, if I understand correctly. |
| Test optional is not for UMC Whites or Asians. The only reason schools like NU and Duke stay TO is because of their D1 athletic programs. If you don’t fit in that category, be prepared to submit your 1500/34 plus test scores to have a realistic chance of admission. |
This. Note that the vast majority of the enrolled classes at these schools submitted scores. |
This is not true at our private if you are a humanities major…..don’t think you can make blanket statements like this. Lots of TO success stories of ORM to private T25 last year. However, none were stem or business. All had stellar leadership, ECs and some had national awards. |

Heard an admissions podcast from Duke AO in October, who said the below re Duke and TO (isn’t Duke the school thar doesn’t publish its CDS)?
“Yeah. Thank you for asking that. About half of our students did not submit standardized test scores and about a third of the students we admitted did not submit standardized test scores.” From The College Admissions Process Podcast: 256. Duke University - Follow-Up Episode - Christoph Guttentag -Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, Oct 16, 2024 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-college-admissions-process-podcast/id1608682810?i=1000673344354&r=2742 This material may be protected by copyright. |
For Duke enrolled fall 2023 freshmen, 50% submitted SAT, 31% submitted ACT https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=duke&s=all&id=198419#admsns |
But you can submit both. So it could be 33% of enrolled freshmen did not submit either, 14% submitted both, 36% submitted SAT only, and 17% submitted ACT only. That would be consistent with both the podcast and the CDS. |
Yes and Duke removed standardized testing from its quantitative rating of applicants, as it simultaneously removed admissions essays from the same algorithm. |
Historical overlap was 20% in fall 2020, but overlap is believed to be much lower, generally, under test optional policies. |
+1 I have a copy of the promotion material from my son's visit and it says that 31% of students were admitted last year w/o test scores. |
Oops, that should say *enrolled" students |
| Duke is trying to diversify its classes with URM/FGLI from NC and SC so thry need to be TO. |
Beginning in the fall 2023 semester, Duke University will provide full tuition grants for undergraduate students admitted to Duke from North Carolina and South Carolina whose family incomes are $150,000 or less. For Duke students who are residents of the Carolinas with family incomes of $65,000 or less, Duke will provide full tuition grants, plus financial assistance for housing, meals and some course materials or other campus expenses, without the need for student loans. |
DP. This roughly fits the advice not to submit below the 25th percentile. Most of these applicants will be hooked. Is it possible for unhooked applicants to get in TO? Yes. That doesn't mean it's easy or common or a good idea to apply TO if the score is decent. |
And you don’t live in the DC area, so you should say that. |
