The juvenile crime issue would probably require a partial repeal of home rule. I doubt Trump’s trifecta would entirely do away with home rule, but I could see them either directly wresting juvenile crime away from the city council, or otherwise exerting pressure on the council to do something.

Trump also wants to take over the city police force and deploy the national guard. Not sure if he’s serious about that or if he’s bluffing, but if he does either of those things, I expect criminals to actually feel some deterrence from committing crime

I'm not sure he needs to touch MPD. The USPP and various other police agencies in DC are under federal control. All that he probably has to do is direct his Interior Secretary to direct USPP to start running stops on every vehicle that runs a stop sign or commits a minor infraction and, with by running licenses and searching the vehicles, you'll be putting away dozens and potentially hundreds of people every day.

MPD need not be further federalized, it just needs to be given the resources and authorities to do what needs to be done to take criminals off the streets, supported by prosecutors who prosecute laws which enshrine meaningful penalties and with the involvement of judges who impose the sentences the laws envision. All that without wailing from the left about the demographic being taken out of circulation to do no further harm.

MPD has ample resources. That’s not the issue.

Didn’t vote for Trump but if his administration wants to make progress in DC then lift the “woke yoke” restrictions on MPD to allow them to pursue criminals, dangerous drivers, etc., the way nearly all police departments can do.

I don’t like the idea of criminals, dangerous drivers etc. escaping their due any more than you do, but the reality is that high-speed chases through city streets have a nasty habit of killing bystanders. As much as certain people would want to have you believe it is, it’s not about being “woke” or going soft on criminals or whatever.

Still, it’s 2024. There is these amazing things called drones which are perfectly capable of following crims-on-the-run without endangering anyone and are nearly impossible to shake. Roll those out and everyone can be happy.

The city council has proven they can’t tackle crime. Progressive criminal justice is an abject failure. The housing voucher program is a disaster where people take advantage of not paying their rent for years at the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in loses. I am a liberal who lives in dc. I can’t believe Trump won. But if there is one slight hope it’s that he cleans the city up and cracks the fk down on car jackers.
