Funny how APE is silent on this...

Isn’t Dorothy Hamm NEW? And Montessori needs to be eliminated anyway.

How about this — they get a refund for all the money they wasted on VPL. Use that.

what's VPL?

Their version of virtual school. You know, trying to re-invent Virtual Virginia.

Money flushed down the toilet. Tons of it.

It is not irresponsible to update the kitchen and HVACs in schools?

WTF is wrong with you people?

Except that’s not what they’ll do. They’ll create a new building for Montessori.

No, they are not creating a new building. It’s an existing building.

Republicans love to spread lies.

You don’t understand. For every project that needs to get done APS has another it wastes money on. Until voters out some real pressure on them they will continue to waste money until they won’t be able to fix a roof or even a door hinge they will be so broke. All you people just always voting yes and always voting for the democrats are what is making this school system as irresponsible as it is. There is no accountability to voters. None.

Why are we considering a $$$$$$$$ renovation for Montessori when many of our other buildings (particularly those in SA that always get overlooked) are in need of HVAC and other updates?

So yeah, it’s gonna be a NO for me.

I’d be more likely to vote yes if we were promised the money would be spent on NECESSARY repairs in some of our South Arlington schools for once.

Not saying there aren’t old buildings in North Arlington, just that it’s South Arlington’s turn for some of the funds.

But ANY money going to option schools? HELL to the NO.

How much money was spent on VPL?

Sorry VLP

Dorothy Hamm is a largely original 75 year old junior high school building. (But with a really nice, state of the art addition.)

So an example of wasteful spending?

More like a fiscally conservative adaptive reuse of an old, historic junior high into a middle school for the modern era.

TJ really needs to be completely rebuilt for example. In fact, 20 years ago, an architecture firm was hired and beautiful renderings for a brand new middle school building were drawn up; there were community meetings, etc. But then the decision was made to just replace the roof and put off rebuilding TJ in 10 to 15 years. We are now past that timeline, and the school is again in need of a new roof.

Maybe we didn’t need a state of the art addition, just a reasonable renovation. These buildings needs to be functional, not beautiful.

Civic buildings should be beautiful, within reason. While we don’t build the grand porticoed schools of the 1920s, we also no longer build the cheap, windowless concrete block boxes of the 1970s. The goal is to create at minimum, comfortable and inspiring places for learning.

The DHMS addition is “state-of-the-art” by virtue of its art, maker, and engineering / design spaces; a library with flexible seating arrangements and natural lighting; classrooms with large windows and modern shading systems; low albedo roofing for lower energy costs; storm water management upgrades. Etc. It’s built to last 50 to a hundred years, and it was completed for a reasonable price.

The only thing we need to know is how much money was spent on VLP.

Are you just trolling?

The bond includes:
>Roof and HVAC upgrades at Dorothy Hamm, Escuela Key, Hoffman-Boston, Jamestown, Oakridge and Williamsburg.
>Kitchen upgrades at Arlington Science Focus, Ashlawn, Barrett and Carlin Springs.
