She was awful but not because she changed admissions. That was the school board. She was awful because she came to the school with the intent to change it - without even getting to know the school or the kids. She never seemed to like the school or understand the kids. And she sent the worst letter to all families in June 2020, when the kids didn’t have school because of Covid snd had missed important rites such as prom and graduation, telling us to check our privilege. So condescending and tone deaf.

Thanks. I was not aware of the letter she sent in June 2020.

She does not have a STEM degree, which appears incongruent with TJ’s focus. Her highest degree was a doctorate in education.

My understanding was her prior roles in California and Maryland involved implementing DEI initiatives in those school districts.

No one at TJ, including the principal, has ever been involved in any part of the freshmen admissions process. Not in its design, implementation, execution, priorities…. none of it.

Some people are still butthurt four years later because she told TJ families to be aware of their privilege in attending one of America’s finest schools, and they interpreted it as an attack on Asians because they equate TJ with somehow being only for Asians.

When she told students to “check their privilege,” do you believe she was speaking only to the 19% of students who are white? Or was she speaking also to the 80+% of TJ students who are BIPOC?

Also: is there some other privilege out there beyond “unearned white privilege” we should know about ?

She came to the school knowing - because it was an open secret in education circles - that TJ had a well-deserved reputation for hypercompetition and excessive streamlining of goals and ambitions. Not to mention the insane overemphasis on elite college admissions.

TJ is a far, far healthier place now than it has been at any point in its recent history. Some families don’t like that because they believe their approach to education is the only one that’s legitimate… I’m glad that the TJ of today opens their children’s eyes to another path to success and a happy, impactful life.

She was speaking to the entire student population and their families. Attending TJ is a privilege, not a right.

That was more or less her role at TJ as well.

Good riddance, DEI hire. Ruined TJ.

Why do DEI hires get moved around within the same organization?

The previous principals didn't seem to evoke such negative reactions from the parents.

I don't know any parents, students or teachers that respect her or like her.
I'm sure they exist but it's not the general vibe.
She seems like a political animal that is trying to pursue an agenda.
She doesn't seem to care about gifted education.

Just look at this thread. Not surprised that she wants to leave with this trash harassing her.

And the Republicans like Asra constantly policing everything.

You clearly have no experience with her as a principal or experience as a TJ family. Just someone who believes rumors. My kids loved the school, loved the rigor and the peers. They didn’t prep to get in and weren’t stressed there. They had found their home.

Dr. B clearly didn’t get this kind of kid. Dr Glazer did. For Dr B to send a letter telling kids who had their lives upended by the pandemic and closed schools to check their privilege was completely out of bounds.

I am no Republican and I hate how Asra’s aggressive approach to the admissions changes further ruined the experience for my kids. But Dr B was horrible for TJ.

She was hired for a reason and she knew fully well what she was getting into when she took the job. She is more of a politician than an educator. Glad to see her leave and she can take her GPS not GPA crap with her. Maybe she can tell the colleges to ask for GPS coordinates instead of GPA. What an idiot!

You must not have a child at TJ. The cheating at the school is pervasive because they let in students who can not do the work. So they cheat to keep up and the TJ admin and their parents look other way. Teachers are very frustrated and leaving. They could not cheat on the PSAT so there's that.

FCPS needs to find new leadership and right this ship now.
