Agree. I assume PP’s kids don’t play on any organized sports teams or extracurriculars either if staying up all night and sleeping in is their routine. |
Playing video games late and sleeping past 12 is not exactly signs of someone living their best life. If he doesn’t do anything with his time, have him get a job. |
Also agree. Before I had teens, i definitely bought into what that PP said. Now that I have a couple and listen to many more talk, I think there are so many more factors than biology. |
DP, My guess is that you have terrible sleep habits in your house. |
+1. My HS Junior takes a rigorous course load, is on a competitive dance team, and has a PT job, all her choice. On the rare occasion she even has the option to sleep in, she sleeps until 10:30 or 11am. It would be hard for her to sleep much later because she knows she needs to more or less stick to her schedule. We are very fortunate that HS by us doesn’t start until 9:30 so she is not chronically tired. Although many clubs and things will meet before school, usually 8:30. |
Not a parenting fail. Sleep hygiene is essential to good health. Mine are in bed by 10 and up by 7. Every day. If sick, they move to couch and stay awake. Rarely sick. |
| The way my teen slept was the way I wished she had slept as a baby. |

Seriously, folks. Read the research. |
You think this research means teens can’t biologically sleep by 10 pm? I don’t think you are interpreting the results correctly. |
| Guys, don’t feed the troll. What tipped me off is when I said my kid rarely stays up past midnight and she responded “that is nuts.” |
+1. DS, 15, plays sports year round. He goes to bed at 10 weeknights, 11 weekends. Wakes up 6:45 during the week. He sleeps in until 9 or so on weekends. We wake him up if he’s not up at 9:30. The few times we let him sleep later than that, he then had trouble falling asleep until very late that night. So, I can see how that could become a habit, and then it feels like teens can’t sleep until late. It started as a bedtime, but now he prefers this schedule. |
