If it is forbidden for students to use, then it's hypocritical.

No, it isn't. Totally different purposes. There are always different rules for kids v. adults. Students are supposed to be learning by doing, and making mistakes, and learning from the mistakes. Second graders could use a calculator to do their fast fact worksheets, but then they aren't learning. No one says it is hypocritical for adults to use calculators. Same with other tools that make life quicker and easier after you've already learned the basic skills. Learn to form your letters before using a keyboard. Learn to do calculations by long hand before using a calculator. Learn to write a strong sentence, paragraph, 5-paragraph essay, creative writing text, etc., before using AI editors.

the real difference is that the letter is being used to broadcast factual information that could have been bullet pted w incomplete sentences

the other is scholarship )formulating an independent thesis basis on research) or an original work of creative writing.

if the drama club cant use chat gpt to send a notice to the wider community re about tryouts for the play then that would be hypocritical

that said, i would still kind of expect those letters to be original. and i doubt you would see this on the collegiate level bc the president would simply want to write it themselves becuase they are an academic for whom it is not laborious and authentically are reflecting on the year ahead. i guess it depends on which direction they can take, some are very thoughtful

No it isn't hypocritical at all.

Students need to do their own writing because they are at school, in part, to learn to write. That's not why the principal is there.

It's like saying I am hypocritical because I'd be upset if my kid's personal trainer lifted weights while my kid sat and watched, but I used movers to lift my boxes the last time I moved.

inwrote the response above re drama club example and i think you do have a pt actually. there is value in not letting the drama club send a notice w chat gpt i suppose.

but there is a difference between a welcome letter & notice of tryouts vs creative writing & a paper on why the french revolution's effect on global uprising has been overexaggerated.

*that said the welcome letter is usually written as an authentic expression of the school leaders vision and personal feelings about the upcoming year so i would judge it being used in this way i think. it is the one time you see this "voice"

**but again if they wrote it and only used chat gpt for edit ideas and saved 5-7 hours,ie a day, doing so that too complicates it. i could see spending almost a day to edit from first to final draft

Not a surprise at all for this extremely low caliber high school head. She also compared herself to Gandhi and Mother Theresa in the letter. Like them, she faces lots of criticism. Not kidding at all BTW

Really poor interpretation of what was actually said. Give it a break.

I’m not PP but I think you can get the true point of the letter and still chuckle at PPs joke about Ghandi and Mother Theresa. I will agree with PP that the letter was a bit off - even if you appreciate the most basic of its intended message.

I agree w/ you. It was poorly written - even if the LLM wrote it! She ties the " I acknowledge that it's impossible to please everyone" immediately to "the most revered figures like Gandhi and Mother Theresa"

Sloppy/clumsy at best

here is the segment so the "give it a rest" person above can try to defend

At GDS, we strive to create a positive experience for everyone, and it's natural to feel disheartened when well-intentioned actions are met with anything less than steadfast approval.

However, I've learned that there are two essential ways to approach feedback. Firstly, I see it as a valuable opportunity for growth. It allows us to examine our actions and ensure they align with our intentions.

Secondly, I acknowledge that it's impossible to please everyone. Even the most revered figures like Gandhi and Mother Theresa had their critics. I remind myself that each person comes from a unique place with their own set of experiences, shaping their reactions. We can't always understand where people are coming from.

I tried to leave the letter with the grace to take away what I thought was the intended message -- but it iss hard to "un-see" the odd tone and the fact that it reads more like a reflective and defensive letter about herself. It was not what I would have expected for a "welcome back to school" letter (especially when it is the first communication for incoming 9th grade families).

trying to give the benefit of the doubt.

but yes, the writing seems raw (i think this is what others are describing as poorly written) and therefore emotional. it definitely seems like something terrible happened that they are moving on from.

did something happen?

all welcome back letters ive seen incl ivy law schools tend to be very personal which is why it is not wrong but prob odd to use gpt for anything other than editing

*the other problem w the letter is it doesnt seem editted at all. i would never guess gpt but maybe suggest it

It seems oddly defensive which gives the letter an off tone. Doesn’t seem to fit the welcome to school vibe that one would expect at the start of the school year.

Really poor interpretation of what was actually said. Give it a break.

GDS HS parent here. There has been much dissatisfaction with her from students, parents, and especially her own faculty.

I’m guessing the somewhat clunky or defensive tone comes from this. She has felt under attack the last two years.

Regardless the welcome back letter is not the place for this. Perhaps her job is under threat?

Whoever wrote this - Yom or AI Yom or hybrid - seems like they are under pressure

If her job is under threat, the tone of that letter isn't going to suddenly make the board of trustees more sympathetic.

No evidence that ChatGPT was used for that letter.
It is dangerous to make this kind of accusation.
If you have a question about the meaning of the letter send your principal an email and ask about it.

I have trouble taking a person seriously who uses the word "firstly" in a business letter.

Technically, there is nothing grammatically wrong with that.
Not sure what you have against this person but you should find a better reason to gripe.

Firstly, the word is archaic

Secondly, on a positive note, this helps prove the letter was not written by ChatGPT, so that's a plus, right?

First, AI detectors are as fake as AI generators -- very fake.

Second, the fact that the principal email looks like a GPT email isn't a sign of cheating, it's a sign that the email (and the principal) are contributing negative value.

Although I wouldn't mind if school figured out how to use AI to fix their grammar and spelling so that one day they could send out an email or flyer that is completely well formed.

First and Second are ordinals so you don't need to add "ly".

Raise your hand if your principal writes letters that you can honestly say are more helpful than what ChatGPT would spit out.

It doesnt seem like chat gpt at all. That would never occurr to me, if anything it could have used another round of edits.

why dont you guys like this person? is that what the letter is referring to?
