I can quite literally do 4x10 sets of 350 kg on the leg press sled machine. I mean sure, I could keep adding more and more plates, but do you know how fun it is to load and unload 20 plates from the thing? Leg press is so, sooo much easier than a barbell squat. I know if I were to try a barbell squat there's no way I could come remotely close to even 200 KG. Yes, leg press machines and curling machines are much easier than the barbell squat. I'm just looking for something to keep the legs strong with more efficiency since I have to hang up my barbell squatting days due to multiple spinal injuries. |
My favorites are the guys with big arms and chicken legs, slumped over on the stairmaster or holding on a treadmill w/ incline. Dudes… what are you DOING. |
Isn’t that almost 800lbs? Also - I actually like loading the plates. It’s extra exercise and that’s why I’m at the gym. You can hold them to your chest and do walking lunges to the rack perhaps; I’ve done that and love it. I also wall sit and read a book on my phone. Seems lazy, but builds up over time. |
It really sounds like you're lifting at a weight level that's beyond the recreational weight lifting level you'd find help with on this board. Are you asking on any weightlifting specialized boards? |
I found a therapeutic PT who really helped. They used to be at the Jackson Clinics at a health club in Tysons that closed during Covid. They really listened and went through a bunch of things to determine my issues and gave me specific things to work on. My three prior PTs from three different places just handed me a generic sheet of exercises for the back and just did those and never bothered to figure out what was going on - it just made things worse. This was over the course of several years, before I found my angel.
So, try to find a PT who will listen and actually work with you to figure out your specific issues and what can be done safely. |

Yes, you could ask at the StartingStrength forums. Those one-legged split squats are a good idea to halve the weight on your spine. Biking and Concept2 rowing is also good. Consider rehabbing your back with hyperextensions, reverse hyperextensions, and kettlebell swings. This board is for housewives to find nannies and complain about their husbands. They do not measure weight in kilograms or triple digits. |
Sounds like you're ego lifting. |
I’ve done ballet since I was a child and my calves have always been very muscular. I now also weightlift as an adult but I think ballet really helped set me up to maintain muscular legs even though I’m almost 50. |
Get the surgery done to fix the disc's. |
Walk up hills. If you are able to wear heels while doing this you will build your legs faster. |
Whine less, lift more. If you have to add more plates, deal therewith. You can. Look for what you can do and be grateful instead of whinging on DCUM about how it's not "fun" to load more plates so you can go harder on a machine. You need to beef up your emotional fortitude far more than your legs. |

This guy who lift 800 pounds is looking for lifting advice on a mommy board? Sure . . . |
Haha. So true. Ridiculous. |
