It's not fine. If she has a 3.4 she's going to need a perfect 4.0 the next two years to get to a 3.8. A 3.8 is needed for a top20 outside of maybe U Chicago. I have scrutinized Scoir for a Big3. The line in the sand (even ED) is about 3.8. Some DCUM posters are seriously out to lunch or haven't had a senior in years.

I should say those grades are not fine for a top20 school. they of course are more than "fine" in general. but the top20 school ship has sailed. Recognize it and embrace the kid you have!!

To OP:

Leo the late bloomer. The best book in the world.

Top 20 or not, the kid's personal growth is the most important thing. Keep that in mind.

Those Bs….yikes.

Her gpa needs to be comprised of mostly As from here on out (maybe some A-) to show upward trend.

We will try our best. The curve is hard. Her grades are above average among students, looks like just outside the ranking for T20 in her school.

Is the student taking the hrdest courses? It is not just grades. T20s want the hardest courseload plus As. Also, you do not know how many of previous T20 admits are hooked. It could be 1/3-1/2 of them, in which case the unhooked students probably all come from the top 15 students. And. “We” are trying? She needs to try her best, and if she already is then you need to accept her where she is.

What efforts to get in T20.

Agree, this student is likely bottom half , AND will not be tracked/slotted into the highest core courses after that freshman year. Private schools typically gatekeep the hardest courses(as they should, so the ones who cannot handle it and would get Cs do not get in).
Embrace the student you have , OP
Kids like this ED to Tufts or BU or Wake from our school.

There is no way on earth she is getting into these schools with a 3.4. Not from evenprivate, not even ED. I have kids at two. The grading is deflated but this is patently false information. Completely false.

Not with a 3.4. Assume she gets that up to a 3.6+?? Otherwise she’s presumably in the bottom 1/2 of the class which doesn’t seem to be what OP is saying?

Applying in August ED to Wake is key — we have seen several 3.5uw get in then….its rolling ED there…..Obv full pay from rigorous private.

Also it depends on the class/cohort. This is all so school dependent.

Just above average typically doesn’t get into T20 unless hooked- FG; LI; URM or athlete. Legacy not that helpful if at this level.

Or they don't have amazing placement. You never know.
OP really can't rely on anyone but their own school's college counseling.

St. Alban's college matriculation over 5 years.

33% of all graduates to the top privates on there: Chicago, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Duke, Cornell.

And that's not even counting privates not listed such as Penn, MIT, Stanford, Hopkins, etc.

That just goes to show what school you attend matters and there is leeway. I guarantee you top 33% of the class isn't a 3.8 or 3.9.

Emory also doesn't care about 9th grade.

Also, please have her talk to her counselor. If the top 30 students get into T20 and she's in the top 30 students, there's no reason she can't

NP - much lower for Colgate than Wake. Our salutatorian this year applied ED to Wake and did not get it; kids who got into Colgate were around the too 20% of the class and unremarkable in terms of extracurriculars and such.

Agree with this. There is a poster (posters?) who tosses out Wake as an option for middle of the pack kids at DC privates but at ours it's a tough admit. GPA 3.8+ is required and this is a school with an average GPA of 3.5.
