DD goes to a small private. Each year about 4-5 go to T5s, about 25-30 go to T20s.
9th grade report card came out, A, A-, B+, B+, B-. She is guessing ranking 30 among students based on their discord grade discussion.
varsity sports.
student government.
non-profit set up with friends.
What efforts to get in T20.

Her gpa needs to be comprised of mostly As from here on out (maybe some A-) to show upward trend.

We will try our best. The curve is hard. Her grades are above average among students, looks like just outside the ranking for T20 in her school.

This was just freshman year. She has time to get her grades up, OP. Likely she had to adjust to high school expectations. As the PP said, the trend is important, and freshman year grades don't count as much as sophomore or junior year grades.

Just above average typically doesn’t get into T20 unless hooked- FG; LI; URM or athlete. Legacy not that helpful if at this level.

So that is 3.4 gpa? Maybe hire a private counselor, private tutors to help her.

Also see if she has ADHD and needs medication. A large percentage of DC private kids are academically coded.

She has a 3.4. It's going to take a full 4.0 the next two years to get that up to a 3.8 by the end of 11th grade and that is what's needed unhooked for a top20 for my kid's private (a big3). My kid is a junior and I've been scrutinizing the stats. A very rare kid may sneak in with less. I find that DCUM is overly optimistic with what is possible but the actual data says otherwise.

There is no way on earth she is getting into these schools with a 3.4. Not from evenprivate, not even ED. I have kids at two. The grading is deflated but this is patently false information. Completely false.

It is what it is. Ask me how I know.

Np. Agree 3.8 is the minimum needed (generally) from our non-DMN private for unhooked kid.

This kid is unlikely to get there and should focus on other schools and creating a very pointy or unique story if there’s an authentic interest to develop.

Unless she gets the grades up I don't think she has a shot at T20. If she continues with these types of grades, she might have a shot at Tulane ED or UMiami ED...... A really strong SAT score might boost chances...... Does she score well on standardized tests, what percentile is she in typically?

She can go to UCLA. The don’t count Freshman year. But need all A’s going forward. Don’t push your kid beyond capabilities. Doesn’t sound like T-20 kid to be honest.
