The IAAT is the first timed test that requires quick work that most kids take. While a good number of parents on this sub forum have kids who have had math enrichment or participate in math competitions, the majority of 6th graders are not going to have had that experience. It is easy to see how kids would be caught off guard and not do well on this type of an exam. I would not call it anxiety.

OP: I would talk to your child about what they are interested in doing before appealing. Not fear mongering here but walk him through what it means to take Algebra in 7th grade. There will be regular quizzes and tests that are timed. There might be a good amount of homework, this is dependent on the school and the kid. DS completed 6th grade this year and rarely had homework. He had friends who missed a shared evening activity because they had homework. The homework was work not finished at school and the kid does have executive functioning issues.

If your child is interested in Algebra in 7th grade, then appeal. Maybe set aside some time during the summer to review concepts somehow so he feels comfortable when school starts. [/quote]

Thanks so much. He has no issues in class. He in in 6th grade AAP and always has timed tests and aces them as well as a good amount of homework/assignments. I think the constant pressure and talk about the IAAT since day 1 or 6th grade freaked him out. They literally have a sign in his classroom that says “IOWA Passing Score: 91 and up!” So just the constant talk about it overstressed him. And you are right. Many did extra enrichment for this. He just did some practice stuff at home. I have no doubt he wouldn’t do great in Algebra. But he’s a kid and one day, he panicked. I sucked at standardized tests as a kid but did great academically in class… some of his classmates have aced these tests but still get 2s in their report card in various subjects… Every kid is different I guess!
