Then some loser coach will act all high and mighty that they finally won a rec tournament and get a glass frame for the mexican hat cup and put it on display in their home office along with their boy scout badges from 1989.

Our group coordinator usually waits until the last minute to put the team together and coaches it with 1-2 practice sessions total for about a week before the tournament. Then everyone is shocked that our team usually loses and he makes up some conspiracy excuses as to why we lost.

+1 yes it seems a little quaint once your kid is playing at a much higher level but most of the kids participating on all star league tried out and made the team and want to compete and do well. its rude to act like its no big deal and give them some cheap hat or a snowcone.

Let’s be honest about these so called “tryouts” for all stars. We had a group coordinator who was also the all star coach. He was always the all star coach because as group coordinator he picks the coach. Shocker! Ultimately, the tryout was a fake sideshow to allow him to set the all star team with his DD and her friends. There were many more talented players in the league that he bypassed.

I don’t think the PP is trying to belittle all stars or the players but let’s not kid ourselves what it is. It’s not really like travel tournaments or travel tryouts. Those coaches are legit and their teams are assigned accordingly.

Loudoun does tryouts midseason. They have four practices. The cost is about the same as the rec season. They sell it as a good deal, 5for about 15 hours of training. To get to 15 they include the tournament matches and the allstar tryouts.

That is wild! Your rec league is way more advanced than mine!

My kids play for FPYC. The coaches always just asked a few kids to join the team towards the end of the regular season. They had practices only after the regular season ended. It wasnt quite as severe as a poster upthread about it being a popularity contest, kids are chosen on ability, but its a very subjective look and no tryouts. The kids who dont get asked just dont know about it happening.

Loudoun does play really well in all stars. Some of the other teams could learn from their model. Actually having talented players as opposed to some volunteer coach slapping together some clique of players at the end of the season. That’s how you develop a winning team! You listening CYA?

Loudoun does well in All Stars because their rec leagues are very big=picking best players
from 20 teams vs smaller locales picking best
players from 5 teams... Being more organized is just cherry on sundae

Its not done that way everywhere. Many places hold tryouts or coaches pick their best players.

Someone posted a social media link to a picture of these a few months ago. An earlier post in that thread described the tournament as having a “Mexican theme” which sounded so awfully cringey, but when I saw the pic I didn’t think it was THAT bad. It’s just the circular sombrero/maracas logo on the website, made into a medal. It’s being described in this thread as if it’s a dollar store party favor, but in the picture it just looked like a standard pile of tournament medals, except with different colors (to match the tournament logo.) I tried to find the DCUM post with the link but am coming up empty.

Don’t get me wrong, the logo (and therefore the “medal”) is still pretty tacky, I was just expecting something terrible like a cartoon “Mexican” with a dirty sanchez.

my kid's team won two all star tournaments before we all moved up to club and he got two nice individual trophies.

not a valor hater but it sounds like they are charging more & giving lamer prizes & and have no customers, why would anyone choose their event over the other one.

it's an easy chance to get a tournament win since all the better teams will most likely be at fpyc fathers day tournament
