Getting into T25 during RD

* Every Ivy took 2 kids each from their large school, many of them were athletes and URMs.

Any specific examples (schools/stats)? Are they all “top 3 in class” type of kids which is what I’m gathering?

Depends on your school. In a large competitive school with lots of high achievers, top 1% have a chance, so let's say 10 kids out of a graduating class of 1,000, sometimes up to 15 would make into T 25 schools. In a smaller class of 200 , top 1% would be 2 kids, sometimes 0-4 would get in. From a poor performing urban or rural school, may be 2-3% would make it, even if they are less competitive than larger school grads but came over adversity, are URM or stand out among school's low performing cohort.

Obviously, athletic stars always have a higher chance than academic stars.

What about a top private?
What % of the class going to a top 25 is deemed an “amazing year” ?
What about T35?

I doubt more than 10% of any school get into T30, no matter how exclusive that school is.

Amazing Year = 40+% at T25 (including hooked)

Lots of URM at exclusive schools. And legacy. And athletes.

You are right. My assumption was incorrect. Some schools send up to 40% of their graduates to ivies.

Probably rest go to other top 25, Military, their state's flagship (if aiming for state politics) or Europe.

Def some privates have a diff T25 %.

Lots of privates have a large % (more than 40%) of T25 placements.

- Some colleges favor private high schools, and particular private schools as that
- lots of hooked candidates
- lots of full pay

Placements at a private are materially different (as a % of the class) from public schools. There’s a ton of data analysis on college placement that goes to a private schools board. And there are significant conversations that take place based on the percentage of kids getting into various tiers.

Assuming Princeton was SCEA and there was no ED2, you were very lucky to get into Georgetown. Things could have been much worse. That’s why you avoid SCEA and have an ED1 and an ED2.

It worked out fine. Got into some of the VA state schools EA plus some others just outside the top 25 so it wasn't too stressful. But I agree that you should choose ED1 and ED2 (if you have a clear #2) wisely.

But what if no clear #2?

Mine didn't have a clear ED2 so just did a bunch of EAs and RDs that fortunately worked out. In hindsight, might have picked an ED1 with a better chance of acceptance. For non-URM, non-recruited athlete, any school with sub-10% acceptance is a total crapshoot no matter what stats you have.

T25 Tier 1 kids have more than stats.

T25 Tier 2 have the stats and often $$$ to pay the asking price.

Almost the opposite at our DC private. The only kids who got in ED were arm/first gen/reasonable stats.

Same

Same

Lots of kids got multiple T25 acceptances RD.

Things are shaking out later these days.

It’s unclear what the takeaway here is

What do these tiers mean?
