Why do people pick on and complain about fat/obese people so much?

Anonymous
Because you can do something about it. It IS a choice, no matter what people say.

Obesity is so, soooooo low in countries like South Korea or Japan. They are still homosapiens with 99.99999% the same biochemistry as we do, yet tons of westerners are fat as hell. It's entirely about decisions regarding exercise and food consumption. Anyone stating they can't control it is being dishonest with themselves. I don't care what you claim. You reduce your calories enough and exercise you WILL lose weight. It is basic physics and laws of thermodynamics.

Obesity is a choice, sorry.

Not saying I agree with this but a few reasons why

It has now been determined that obesity is a disease just as alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases.

Higher mammals have an instinctive disgust reaction to the appearance of disease and injury. It's an evolutionary adaptation.

Diseases of the mind: lack of self control.

Americans don't smoke much. That's why we're fat.

Vaping may have us.

Fat people were cool when food was expensive. Go to an art museum.

A lot of the really extreme anti-fat people comments are made by men who are basically upset that women aren’t out there looking aesthetically pleasing, to them, at all times. That’s it. The same people who complain about the dyed hair, facial piercings, tattoos, “unflattering” clothing, etc. And the pick me women who want to get attention and acceptance from that crowd. Normal people don’t really care honestly. Yes there’s the “obesity drives up everyone’s health insurance premiums etc.” excuses but let’s be honest … even if we in the US had a lower population obesity rate similar to countries in Western Europe, the crooked insurance companies would still find ways to screw us, and age/having an aging population drives up insurance and health care costs just as much if not more.

Blah blah blah

Maybe I'm just a taxpayer sick and tired of paying taxes cover trillions of dollars of healthcare costs because so many fellow Americans eat like trash and refuse to exercise.

The very low obesity rates elsewhere in the world PROVE obesity is a a lifestyle and choice based issue. If obesity were an uncontrollable disease then you'd expect humas across the planet to have relatively similar prevalence of it. But we don't. The US is far farther than many other countries. It's because of choice.

Now stop with the woe is me crying. Do something about your obesity and stop expecting me to pay for your lifestyle choice.

Look, if you have a thyroid problem that causes obesity, that's understandable. But stop whining if you eat far too much meat, tons of carbs, processed foods, and don't exercise 5 or more times per week. That's on you.

I read stuff like this and I feel so sorry for you. I can’t imagine living my life this profoundly ignorant and miserable. But OP, here is your answer in a nutshell: angry, ignorant, and miserable people who hate their lives and themselves need a target for their existential rage, because otherwise they’d turn that rage on themselves.

I don’t need to lose weight and I exercise daily, before you predictably lash out. It’s annoying I even have to say that, but it’s obviously critically important to you, so I am telling you.

But you're right; why can't we focus on how everything smells like weed now? I absolutely loathe this.

Op here. There is a huge amount of hate. Nike and Target got over 80,000 complaints respectively when they introduced plus sized mannequins several years ago. Look all the hate Lizzo gets, just for being her. There are literally hundreds of Reddit threads complaining about fat people. Of course we know that being overweight causes additional health issues that may affect healthcare costs. But that’s not why people HATE and say HATEFUL THINGS about fat people. That’s not the reason fat children get bullied in school.

When I traveled, after takeoff, I would stand in the back of plane for the entire flight until descent because I was afraid I might get drama from the seat mate. I generally started to fly first class ( and I’m not bragging about that). When I modeled and had to travel, it was in my contract.

Maybe I’m faltering because somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought being thinner would be different, but then just find something else to hate on you about.

It is a form of oppression just as detestable as calling someone the “N” word.

No they aren't. Women critique weight far more than men do.

There are a lot of delusional people on this thread. They have very active (and aggressive) imaginations.

Do these people only hate fat people?

No, but they will get in trouble if they express their hatred for disabled, POC, etc. Fatness is not a protected class so they go all out.

Personally I find obese people highly unattractive and gross.

I have been both, and I agree that it's eye opening. I was normal weight for my early/teen years, and never noticed anything. Then I gained weight due to a medical condition in my 20s. In my 30s, I suffered from anorexia to finally get the weigh monkey off my back (and don't say, oh you shouldn't have done that -- 'regular' just-eat-less-and-exercise-more methods didn't work due to my condition, so I had to literally starve myself). I can tell you that NOTHING that you do in life will be as well praised as losing the weight. Not my doctorate, not research work, not charitable work, nothing. The world opens up to you -- people treat you better and nicer, etc. They told me how 'healthy' I looked, even though I didn't, and my blood work was insanely bad.

After I had my child and didn't have time to obsessively starve myself any more and finally got enough calories in my system, the weight came back on to my set point (without crazy eating, just eating like a normal person), which is overweight. I recently got diagnosed with high blood pressure (which runs in my family, including my mother and grandmother who were skinny skinny people who didn't work at it at all, and were at the heart of all the condemnation in my family because they consider being overweight an intentional moral failure) so I really need to drop some weight because I don't like taking medications. So I'm back to really unhealthy eating patterns, eliminating entire categories of food from my diet and in such small quantities that I'm dropping 10 pounds a month, and here we go again..."Oh you're doing SO great! Wow you look great! Isn't it great to be so healthy? What did you do? I want to tell my sister so she can get skinny too". I haven't had anything that tasted good in months (because now even salt is off the table, along with sugar and wheat), I haven't been full in forever, and I get really woozy when I stand up too fast. But this is all for my "health", right guys?

But I'll be back in skinny world/skinny female reality again very soon, but now I see it for what it is.

I am a woman and I will judge both men, women and children who are obese. I don't want my kids playing or hanging out with obese kids.
