What’s the game?

You buy work with the same SA and develop “a relationship” ie spend money. You develop a wish list. When something on your wish list or similar becomes available and if you “qualify”based on spend level and relationship, you SA will offer you the bag. Hence the term QB, qualifying bag. These are bags that don't go on the floor for general consumption, Birkins, Kelly etc.

There are other nuances and other paths but this is the general simple overview.

I think if men go in to buy for their wives they probably get to just buy the bag.

Sometimes that works. Not always. Plus they would have to have one, they don’t always have one. Depends on store also and demand at that store.

In the age of social media, everything is overexposed and basic. Might as well just buy what you like.

Ok but why do people like it?

PP. I'm a bag lover and own several nice items, but not a Birkin. I go back and forth on whether or not I'll ever buy one.

Like all luxury goods, I don't think you can ever divorce how much you like something from the status associated with it. The Four Seasons hotels are amazing from a service and accommodation perspective, but if you removed the brand reputation, could they still charge $1000 for an entry level room? Probably not. I do think many women like the Birkin because of the social status associated with it. Scoring a Birkin (or Kelly) is seen as reaching the top of the purse hierarchy. Of course, the irony is that there's a whole other hierarchy after that. Who has a "collection" of Birkins in every color under the rainbow? Who has the exotics? Who has the mini? It's never-ending if you're only status-chasing.

That said, I personally appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into Birkins and Kellys. They are handmade by one person and take anywhere from 18-24 to cut and sew. Hermes leather quality is amazing and their dying techniques and color are unparalleled. If you ever have an issue with your bag, Hermes won't fight you like other brands (I'm looking at you, Chanel) and will simply repair the bag. They stand behind their items. In a world where quality is going downhill, Hermes is continuing to define excellence in the game.

+1 I mean, there's still a waiting list, but men don't have to play the game. Make sure he's dressed well and buys something for himself, too.

The whole thing is disgusting and belittling for the middle class strivers.

The whole birkin thing kind of ruined the scarves for me. I have a bunch and I don’t wear them as much because I don’t want to be associated with the brand. I know no one can tell usually that it’s an Hermes scarf when it’s tied on though. But people will always know it’s a birkin or a fake birkin.

Birkin is a better investment than a diamond.

As are Chanel bags.

My friend received one as gift from a friend who did her wrong. I never heard the story but it must be a doozy.

A friend's husband was in New York for work about ten years ago. He went in and they tried to play the game with him and he was like just get me the bag and they did. So stupid.

I don't understand the point of the game. Are they trying to pretend these bags are a scarce commodity that only very special people are allowed to buy? Or is it not pretending? I don't get it.

Combination of both.

They are scarce but they want you to buy other stuff so that isn’t t the only thing they are selling.

A lot to houses have pieces they don’t put in the floor or offer to gen pop.
