PP. I'm a bag lover and own several nice items, but not a Birkin. I go back and forth on whether or not I'll ever buy one.

Like all luxury goods, I don't think you can ever divorce how much you like something from the status associated with it. The Four Seasons hotels are amazing from a service and accommodation perspective, but if you removed the brand reputation, could they still charge $1000 for an entry level room? Probably not. I do think many women like the Birkin because of the social status associated with it. Scoring a Birkin (or Kelly) is seen as reaching the top of the purse hierarchy. Of course, the irony is that there's a whole other hierarchy after that. Who has a "collection" of Birkins in every color under the rainbow? Who has the exotics? Who has the mini? It's never-ending if you're only status-chasing.

That said, I personally appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into Birkins and Kellys. They are handmade by one person and take anywhere from 18-24 to cut and sew. Hermes leather quality is amazing and their dying techniques and color are unparalleled. If you ever have an issue with your bag, Hermes won't fight you like other brands (I'm looking at you, Chanel) and will simply repair the bag. They stand behind their items. In a world where quality is going downhill, Hermes is continuing to define excellence in the game.
