What’s the game?

You buy work with the same SA and develop “a relationship” ie spend money. You develop a wish list. When something on your wish list or similar becomes available and if you “qualify”based on spend level and relationship, you SA will offer you the bag. Hence the term QB, qualifying bag. These are bags that don't go on the floor for general consumption, Birkins, Kelly etc.

There are other nuances and other paths but this is the general simple overview.

I think if men go in to buy for their wives they probably get to just buy the bag.

+1 I mean, there's still a waiting list, but men don't have to play the game. Make sure he's dressed well and buys something for himself, too.

The whole thing is disgusting and belittling for the middle class strivers.

Are middle class strivers, buying $30-50k bags?

The bags aren't that much. Like $12k, which is still a lot of money but not $50k expensive.

I actually think they are. My guess is the bulk of Hermes, Gucci etc business comes from middle class buyers.

My boyfriend (now hubby) found it on the skilift in Vail. It was just sitting there, sparkling in the sun!

Can someone walk me through how an interaction would go in which one is trying to procure a bag? What exactly are the rules? Does one feign interest in another pricey item and hope they offer you a Birkin? (Sorry but I am a poor who appreciates good quality and like to be prepared should my fortunes change.)

+1, no man would put up with that crazy game.

Crazy to spend that kind of money on such an ugly bag, or any bag at all really. Unless you have many millions then this is just stupid, pretentious behavior.

As are Chanel bags.

A diamond is a really terrible investment though?

Yes. Some cars are even better investments. Not many, but some.

It’s like buying a Volvo instead of a Toyota.

I'm going to France in a few days. There's no game there, you can just go to an Hermes in Paris and buy it.

Really? I read that in Paris you need to request an appointment the day before and adequately impress the sales associate. And still, they might not have Birkins in-store that day.

A friend's husband was in New York for work about ten years ago. He went in and they tried to play the game with him and he was like just get me the bag and they did. So stupid.

I don't understand the point of the game. Are they trying to pretend these bags are a scarce commodity that only very special people are allowed to buy? Or is it not pretending? I don't get it.

Yes. They pretend you’re not worthy of owning one or you can’t afford it or don’t belong on the store just to make you feel like you have to prove yourself by buying it.

People, abusive sales people don’t deserve your money. Hermes is one of the rudest stores but many of them are rude.

The PP has no clue, you can't just walk in and get one. For my lifestyle, a Birkin is not very practical, so I'm on the waiting list for a Kelly. I have a picotin 26 in clemence and the leather is TDF. I'd love a Lindy too in a fun color and a Constance 24. Lindy is not a quota bag but it sells right away, so it's also hard to get.

I have family in France. You can absolutely go buy one. Yes you have to have an appointment. But they don't make you do a song and dance. Also, get a better hobby my god.

This is so sad.

Right? None of these things are investments.
