Totally sissyfication of America. We are making our children weak.

lol I grew up in Canada. Never had a snow day, temps were often -30 with a lot of snow. What kind of buses do we have here in MCPS that they won't start at 21F?

I went to high school in Canada! We plugged in our cars at night because they had little heaters on the engine so they'd start in the morning. Everyone's car had a little plug hanging out of the hood. I imagine the school buses had them too.

What were the options, go virtual or delay. You would complain at both. This isn't why kids are struggling. This reason is because their parents cannot be bothered with them and want to dump them at school for free babysitting.

This trope again?

Given the state of our school parking lots, which I usually use as a barometer, I was surprised by the delay. Both our neighborhood ES and HS parking lots haven't been plowed

You’re just an embarrassing person. I feel sorry for your kids.

I think PP was just being cheeky

Well if Americans weren’t so sue-happy this wouldn’t be as tough of a call. One kid slips on ice and hits their head, parents sue. Parents can’t sue for too many two hour delays.

This is a real risk scenario. A friends kid slipped on the playground and wound up with half of her lower half in a cast. Her mom had to take family medical leave to care for because the kid was on pain meds and needed help moving around and going to the bathroom. MCPS parents would sue the district in a heartbeat in that scenario.

Dereliction of duty! I expect to see resignations immediately.

+1 the parking lot at Fallsmead ES is a literal sheet of ice

If anyone is inclined to a random act of kindness…hot chocolate for the underpaid building services staff who will be out in those parking lots tomorrow cleaning up.

You’ve been busy tonight, posting your outrage in the jobs forum about OPM and now MCPS.

They’d probably rather have cash or a gift card given what they get paid.

Exactly, people and schools are prepared. We rarely get snow so most aren’t prepared and those heaters are special order only now and not done in this are.

They make a set of alternative schedules (2.5hr early release, 2hr delay, etc) and work everything out for buses to service elementary, middle and high schools. Don't forget that schools all share the same buses. So there cannot be a 3hr delay schedule, it doesn't work out with the bus distances in traffic, they wouldn't have time to get everyone back and forth for every school.

Logistical operations for such a large county are a nightmare.

Thank you. This is helpful

MCPS should just close tomorrow.
We need to respect the weather

This is where having bigger kids is so much less stressful. I’m going in to work tomorrow and it is what it is. If they cancel, the kids will just have to stick closer to home. I remember feeling so much anxiety about closings when they were little.
