To the poster that says why are we doing private, I’m not seeing a correlation between closing early one day and my reason for choosing private which has nothing to do with length of school day.

Then homeschool. Then you don’t have to worry about any of this drama.

You’re the one who is the drama queen. Such an over-reaction to one day!

Cancelling work for wind is the very definition of Karen level melodrama.

Teachers (and new drivers) should absolutely risk driving home in severe weather so you can go for yet another promotion at your high-powered job.

It is too bad the paycheck for teaching history does not include hazard pay for driving home in extreme inclement weather. Donate more money to your child’s school maybe?

Lots of people commute for their jobs. Why are history teachers special?

They can’t drive safely unless it’s 70 degrees and sunny. It’s an accommodation.

We like to keep everyone, including teachers, safe. From time to time that means we are inconvenienced and that is fine with us. Apparently this is not the case for everyone. (Shrugs)

Are you all paying any attention to the students or is this just how you spend your planning periods? Also, don’t you have access to a window?

If this scares you, please give up your driver’s licenses. We don’t need Nervous Nellie having panic attacks on the road in any weather conditions.

In Bmore after school activities and early morning (6am) swim practice cancelled. Very happy re latter, regardless of whether it’s warranted!!

It is a bit crazy that schools canceled. We follow MCPS unfortunately.

This has a significant chance of flooding, power outages, wires down, etc. Very smart for public schools that rely on not-very-maneuverable buses that have long routes through a wide variety of terrain to close early or at least cancel after school activities. Any privates that follow public cancellations, well, that’s what happens—there are times it makes sense for a county system to close that don’t necessarily make sense for a single school. Although cancelling after school activities makes a lot of sense today (early closings, debatable). Kids can’t be outside for this. No one wants to navigate 50-70 mph wind gusts at night in a downpour, regardless of what vehicle you’re driving. Get your kid at the end of the school day and get home.

I’m a teacher who once had to stay at school until the late evening hours because of an emergency. I couldn’t go home to my own family (where I wanted to be) because I was at school taking care of others’ children.

It would be nice if I could get a fraction of the respect other professionals get. Are you able to do that? Just a fraction?

Our Catholic K-8 dismissed at 12:30.

The issue is that the winds are coming from the east, not the west. This is counter to the usual direction of wind, which normally travels from over the mountains to our west and to east. The roots systems of trees are built to withstand gusts from this usual trajectory; the root system on the other side isn't as developed and strong. A series of strong wind gusts can cause trees to come down quickly, especially given how wet the ground is. The closures are preventative. Schools are damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

Charters are too. DCI, LAMB, DCB all closed early today as well. I suspect there are others, but those are the ones that I know.
