Signed, immigrant.

Amazingly true. I've often felt we're just a victim of our own success. There's just not enough to really complain about except at the extreme margins.

Many people get offended by the word “abortion” by not by the word “guns”. The incoherence is quite disturbing.

For some reason this never happens to me.

Example, using the word “female” to describe a woman which I occasionally do, and have heard countless other women use it in the exact same context. I sometimes get called out for it by these easy to offend types.

Another person got offended when I said I have a wife, key word *have*, implying that I somehow meant that my wife was my literal property simply because I used a possessive verb.

In another example, I was giving advice to a younger family member who is having financial troubles and is starting out in the art field, I mentioned that art is known to not pay too well in general, they told me this comment was offensive as if I was diminishing the importance of the art profession.

Woke-ism. That is why.

The “woke” movement is an outgrowth of:

- identity politics.

This. And it’s the millennials. Gen X isn’t so prickly.

I'm a millenial at 42 and grew up when people weren't sheep or easily offended which more than I can say for the libs or gene. Latinx lmao. Traveling to Texas is a relief.

Liberals and especially progressives are offended at absolutely everything!

It is getting more and more ridiculous.

I would be worse in these situations. if I bothered to care. I literally told a family member getting a degree in art was not valued by society. And if she wanted to know what was valuable to look at the dollar signs attached to the professions. It (money) is a literal measurement of value to society, not to an individual. She wasn't offended though; she sees my point. Now, to an individual that person may value it more and that's fine too - that's why arts survives through rich people donations. I'm not super wealthy, and I eventually want my kids off my books, so I actively discourage them going into art history or any non paying pointless nonsense. Flame away DCUM. I'd be offended too, if I cared.

Yes, but why are things different now? What caused the shift? Do you think it’s a good or bad thing? I feel like in 10-20 years the language that 25 year olds feel is acceptable now will be considered offensive in some other way.

It's always been weird to refer to women as "females", especially when people never refer to men as "males" or say something like "men and females" in a sentence. I remember people being irked by this in the 90s.

But people do refer to men as males. I think of myself as a female. When the context is appropriate, my first thought is to say female.

Like taking a knee on the sidelines of a football game? Or electing an incompetent megalomaniac authoritarian because he "PWNZ th' Libz?"

Or me. And there's a saying right. If you need a jerk in the morning you met a jerk. If you meet jerks all day, you're probably the jerk.

Just saying.

All women are de facto human, but not all females are human, so the term female can sound dehumanizing. It mostly depends on context. If you're not having a discussion about medicine or biology, you should just default to women.

It's a very good thing. People are more enlightened about language now. They want to be more inclusive and avoid microaggressions. They're not the issue. You are, old timer.

true

Meh. Liberals weren't the ones freaking out because someone said Happy Golidays instead of Merry Christmas. Plenty of conservatives with a chip on their shoulder, too.
