I had a Brazilian friend. She was of French, Italian and Portuguese ancestry. She was downright offended if people called her Hispanic or Latino or anything but White. And yes, she was White. |
+1. It is extremely weird that you have met 1000s of Brazilians but never a "white" Brazilian. |
I have met a few white Brazilians, but most have been black.
There is wide range of white. Most white Brazilians and Portuguese would stand out in Northern/Eastern Europe as foreigners. It does not mean they are not white though. |
Same for Portugal. I would not consider them “white.” Also Portugal was a major stopping point/port for the slave trade. Many Portuguese have African ancestry somewhere in the tree. This is per info learned in Portugal, several Portuguese friends I have, and history. |
They are POC everywhere except the US. Same as Armenians, Arabs, etc. In US they can only choose White category because they are not African American. US categorizing people is very racist, I usually refuse to mark myself as White because I am not white, I am caucasian race, and if they failed to list the race properly, I am not answering their stupid questionnaire. |
They’re white.
White is also a color, BTW. So white people are people of color as well. |
my white DH says, "I'm not devoid of color". ![]() |
Adriana Lima identities as Afro-Brazilian. |
Idk as a Hispanic I have a feeling Portuguese are racist? Did they not inhabit Brazil and had a hand at slavery there?
Also worker with one and she was the most money hungry person I have ever met. Took clients from her coworkers very blatantly. Not friendly and didn't seem to like Hispanic or even Italians. |
Whether they were racist has nothing to do with if they are POC. POCs can be racist. |
![]() Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest soccer players of all time, is Portuguese. He doesn't look white to me. |
Really? He looks white to me! |
It depends on the perspective of those judging. My grandfather was of Portuguese descent (Madeiran and Azorean) but was raised in Bermuda as a third generation Bermudian. Although Bermuda was discovered by the Portuguese (Spanish Rock was renamed Portuguese Rock), the early settlers were English who considered the Portuguese immigrants to be PoC, similar to Black Africans brought into Bermuda from the West Indies slave trade. The Bermudians called / call them “Portagees” and they were / are definitely a caste below the English. Most of my Portuguese family married the offspring of Irish and British military men stationed in Bermuda, and some of my relatives have completely shed any claim to being Portuguese. I did not realize that being Portuguese was considered “colored” until I was an adult. My mother inherited the dark Portuguese hair and eyes, and tanned easily. Her German-American step-father called her a “Zeguena” (gypsy), a racial slur.

They're not poc. I believe they're racist though. |
He is darker than Kamala Harris, how in the world he is white? |
