Dear Teacher, I appreciate you and the inconvenience of doing make-ups for kids who have a huge variety of excuses. But, these ortho/doctor/dentist offices require that we make appointments up to 6 months in advance, and we parents aren't able to guess when tests might be, or reschedule the appointments at the last minute. I know it is a hassle, but we aren't all liars. I will admit to having lied when my kid had 4 or 5 tests on a single day. |
| You should just treat it like you would for a sick day at work. Just send an email or call that the child is sick and he is staying at home. For extended sick leave over 5 days I think it’s reasonable to ask for a doctor note, my workplace does ask for one. Otherwise it’s none of their business. |
| I would either call the doctor’s office and ask if they could send the form they use for these situations. Or I would write an excuse note myself. I think the school is saying they need some kind of written documentation to excuse an absence. |
She calls to verify all parent notes. I assume enough kids are forging notes to make her effort worthwhile… |
We all aren't liars...but I've lied when it benefited my child! The problem with this mindset is that if every student did this, the teacher would lose a lot of time trying to give retakes, but only the entitled fee benefit instead. |

How would she respond to absences for religious observances? Can she deny my child for Spaghetti Monster days of observance? |
That's not true. She only calls about suspicious ones. |
+1 Tip of the iceberg. This is certainly a waste of everyone's time but there's a lot worse. |
| I've never provided a doctor's note unless they've been sick for 3 or more days. I just dropped my kid off yesterday around 10 because he had a dentist appointment. It was excused with no note. |
Too funny—she calls every time. My handwriting must look child like! |
| If the school puts the doctor’s name in Google it’s going to find out what the doctor’s specialty is. Don’t trust them with that information. |
My kid was sick with the flu and missed more than the allotted days… so we sent our note along with a doctor’s note upon return to school. A slight pain, but the policy was pretty clear. And, I get it. |
Me too! |
A PEDIATRICIAN!!! I think they have better things to do.. |
