Doctor's note

Anonymous
In a nasty battle with the school (long story) Brought child in from a doctor's appointment and the secretary hassled me about showing a doctor's note. My child is rarely absent and I don't remember ever being asked for one before. She said the system is cracking down on this. Was curious if other people have recently been asked for doctor's notes?

Tell her to mind her own business, your child’s medical appointments are between you and the doctor.

For a single partial-day absence? Nope.

Our mcps school absence form says this:”Fill out this form to let us know that your child will be absent and/or missing instruction. Please remember that MCPS requires a doctor’s note for all students absent 5 days or more.” Never been asked for a note, and I think it was marked as “excused” when I listed illness as reason, even without note.

Op here- I told her I would send her the appointment reminder because I didn't have a note. It felt uncomfortable because the appointment was for a mental health professional

Oh hell no, they don't need to know what appointment it was. As PP above said, remind them of the rule. And so what if it's an unexcused absence? It doesn't matter.

Do you feel it was because of “the battle” you are going through? If so, is there any way to make amends? That would be horrible to feel uncomfortable going into your child’s school. Sorry you’re dealing with this!

+1 just let it be "unexcused." What are they going to do about it anyway?

Their policies are so unclear and they focus on the wrong things.

Op here..
Ok just my paranoia - I saw this was announced to the whole school in September

Attendance matters:

In order for an absence, late arrival or early departure to be marked excused we need the note from the doctor. Please, remember to provide the doctor note for all appointments. We need these notes within 3 days of returning to school

If you haven’t provided it, then don’t send it. Don’t trust MCPS with this information. It’s none of their business.

A note saying your child had an appointment and is cleared to return to school is normal.

Even dentists give them after a cleaning.

It’s not a privacy violation, it’s for truancy

Let it be unexcused. None of their business at all.

Wait… that is not MCPS policy!

Yes. Chronic absenteeism is a crisis in school districts nationwide, including MCPS. It’s been all over the news.

Go back and get a doctor’s note, or live with the unexcused absence. But you’re not going to be exempt from the policy.

Most doctors office are use to generating these quickly. They don’t contain any key data besides appoint date and time and doctors signature.
