Does Tim Beaty have kids in ACPS? Is he involved in ACPS at all? Never heard about him until now. He announced his run for school board at the Alexandria Dems meeting, where he got all his signatures for a "non-partisan" campaign.
I don't always agree with Gina, but she is not the hand picked person. I think the SChiol Board members wanted past board members to run. They think the learning curb is too steep. This is an educated area. I don't think Mr. Beaty or Ms. Baum will have a hard time understanding School Board. Teacher vacancies, retention, pay is most important to me, tied with academic achievement. Beaty sounds like he's solely focused on collective bargaining. That's not the only issue facing ACPS. I haven't heard anything else from him. To me, this is a starting block for him to launch a political career. Say what you want about Baum, but she's open, honest, and willing to work with others with different opinions. I feel so bad for both Beaty and Baum. Why did Bailey resign? |
Tim is not a politician, and since his retirement has been part-time substitute teaching in the ACPS. He's open and a believer in the value of public eductation, and his own kids attended public schools. |
The ACPS apologists and establishment are all in for Baum. "Never heard about him until now." He's got my vote! |
He resigned just in time! Redistricting is coming around again. Hilarious.
More busy work from this do-nothing, achieve nothing board and more $$$ for the consultants. |
Below is a copy of Ms. Baum’s bio. It is very clear that she served the city of Alexandria, but not the establishment. Additionally, she has 30 years of experience in Alexandria and both of her children attended our public school system. Her youngest will graduate in the spring. in other words, it is a clear choice for any Alexandrian! Mr. Beaty won’t know which side of the table to sit on during collective bargaining. Ms. Baum supports instant pay increases for our teachers and then supports the process of collective bargaining. She has publicly announced that her first act on the board will be to make a motion to have our teachers’ step increases, pay that they have not received, restored immediately.
Gina Baum is a 30-year resident of Alexandria currently running as a school board candidate for the special election being held on January 9, 2024. She hails from an education family; before they retired, Gina’s father served as a Superintendent of Schools, and her mother was a Director of Special Education. Gina began her career working for Communities in Schools, a national nonprofit education organization that provides community services within schools to surround students with the support they need to reach their potential. From there, Gina worked on national political campaigns. While focusing on motherhood, Gina decided to give back to her community through civic duty rather than the local political machine. Gina was encouraged by her mentor, Judy Guse-Noritake, to actively participate in community service. She contributed to Alexandria through 13 years on Alexandria’s Parks and Rec Commission and 10 years as its representative to the Waterfront Commission. She also served on numerous Waterfront Commission subcommittees to analyze new waterfront developments and most recently served on the Flood Mitigation subcommittee. Gina was a founding member of Waterfront for All, an advocacy group that supported the redevelopment of Alexandria’s waterfront. A tireless advocate for her community, Gina brings a breadth of knowledge and experience with the inner workings of Alexandria’s city government. She is uniquely qualified as a community activist, longtime resident, and ACPS parent to serve on Alexandria’s School Board |
Talk about establishment! The SB doesn't need anymore Alexandria Dem establishment members. |
She is the hand-picked candidate of the political incumbents. Absolute, hard NO. |
This is not true. She has always been outspoken and tireless fighting the ACPS machine. Beaty thinks unionizing teachers in a right to work state should take precedent. ACPS has so many things that require immediate attention other than collective bargaining. |
No one understands why Tim Beaty is running other than he was hand picked by the ADC - who invited him solely to their 12/4 meeting where he collected his signatures to get on the ballot for the non-partisan race. Gina has never towed the ADC line and never will. The ADC dislikes her bc she refuses kowtow to the party. She worked many years in National politics and chose civic duty over political machine in her local community. The labor guy is the ADC’s pick and Michelle Reif’s husband’s friend….if you want the status quo vote for him. If you want an out spoken public servant who will hold other board members accountable vote for her. |
He doesn’t have any kids in ACPS and never has. He has no concept of what is happening in schools except that he has “substitute” taught in a few classes in 1 elementary school. It is insulting at best that this man who has absolutely no experience being an ACPS parent or understanding of the adversity students face, and no idea what a step is (per ALXNow article) as it relates to teach salaries, thinks he can waltz in and be elected. He will tell you he only wants to do the job for ten months and has no interest in the job thereafter.
He clearly has no idea what is happening in schools. He’s retired and the last retired guy to serve on the board had to resign in frustration…..this guy is not capable of articulating parent and teacher concerns. |
Her love for Wilson speaks volumes. You can keep pretending she isn't an establishment candidate but there is too much out there that says otherwise. |
“The ACPS apologists and establishment are all in for Baum.” What?! How can you say this? The Dems selected Beatty and gave him the needed signatures. Gina and I disagree on many citywide issues, but she is the best candidate for school board. She asks the tough questions, wants transparency, is an ACPS parent. Beatty has only subbed in sweet kind calm elementary schools. I point blank asked him what he knows about Alexandria city High School. He did not even respond. Email Gina if you have questions. I have already. GinabaumforACPS@gmail.com |
Meghan Alderton had her kids in private. She was school board chair. Hutchings had one of his kids in private. The woman who runs TAG/AAS has her kids in private. Why does that matter now? |
Gina Baum and I differ politically, but I admire her ability to get her feet wet and do the work. She is not afraid to challenge the status quo or speak up. She can also work with people who have different opinions, ideas, beliefs than her. Here is why I'm voting for Gina over Tim Beaty: Gina might differ from me, but she understands how city council and the city works. She knows how ACPS works. She might need to learn about the school board but she's politically savvy.
Gina Baum has been at the school board meetings advocating for teachers. Asking to fill staff vacancies for core classes. Asking to compensate teachers and restore steps. Asking for services for students with disabilities. Suggesting we use rec spaces during the pandemic to space our students and accommodate more students and use outdoor rec and Cory spaces for outdoor learning and outdoor lunch to mitigate COVID, which the former superintendent wouldn't even entertain. Her son attends ACHS. She's an ACPS parent. Tim Beaty seems like a nice guy. But he is a professional union organizer who is retired with very lose ties to Alexandria. He tutors at and is a sub. For what, to be the handpicked choice of Alexandria Dems? This is a nonpartisan race! Before, the School Board was trying to get two former SB members to run. Neither did. So Alexandria Dems formally organized to get signatures for at their meeting on December. They didn't provide Ms. Baum the same and he easily collected signatures to get on the ballot. Mind you, this is a nonpartisan election. Never have I heard from this guy at any school board meeting or in any parent group. I never saw him involved in any PTA or PTAC or grassroots groups. I don't know him from volunteering in the community and I'm involved in a lot of volunteer work that seems like I'd know him. It does not appear he knows much about our public schools. He has all the right taking points. But he's focused solely on one issue, collective bargaining in a right to work state. ACPS could restore steps for the teachers if they cut their budget elsewhere or asked the city for money. With Jackson and Gaskins both running for mayor, who is going to say "no" to supporting teachers? |
Tim sounds like a nice guy, but I want a known entity. Where can I learn more about his campaign? This special election is coming up soon! |
