ACPS - School Board Member Resigns

Anonymous
Teachers and other staff need more collective bargaining power, especially the power to push back on curriculum and much of the unnecessary administrative paperwork they need to do. If teachers had more discretion to teach how they want to, maybe the achievement gaps will improve. If Beaty can help the board see this perspective, that's a vote in my book.

I don't think so. Reif and Green have pretty radical agendas. Reif in particular has some strange quotes out there. I was pro Tim until they endorsed because the teachers really need a voice. No one is standing up for them.

Now I'll just stay home.

So if you look at Greene’s Facebook endorsement of Beaty, Gaskins has “liked” the endorsement.

I find it so frustrating that the political establishment has rallied around the candidate opposed to a candidate who speaks openly about ACPS myriad deficiencies without any discussion of the candidates’ positions on relevant issues.

I agree with you but this is also what the voters and parents want. Look at Booze, Baird and Ignacio. All clearly thrilled to be part of the smug establishment during the campaign...all enthusiastically elected. In Baird's case her big supporters are private school parents who have no clue about what is happening in ACPS. But she's part of the establishment (lots of posts with VA Dems and ACD, adores Wilson, LOVED Hutchings) so rubber stamp to School Board.

I guess if you criticize ACPS, you have to resign. Love how respected differing opinions are in Alexandria. LOL!

Karen Graf's comments are pretty funny considering that she was part of the problem at ACPS. She was instrumental in getting us here so she should really sit down.

I know for a fact that these two hand-picked Beaty. They were making calls around to see who they could get to run that would not disrupt their status quo and hopefully would not run again. Bill Campbell was on that list, considered agreeing—but they’d already moved forward with Beaty. It was absolutely their priority to have a candidate who would not question the school board or superintendent. They are very unhappy Baum is running.

I have people trying to sell Baum to me. "Yes, she loves Wilson and is awful on so many things but she's slightly better than Beaty."

My only response is "how did Amy Jackson work out for you?". Heard all the same arguments for her. The fact is ... this election doesn't matter.

Yes, I agree the election will have limited overall impact because it will only potentially change one seat on the Board out of nine.

But, I disagree with you using support of Wilson as a proxy for whether a candidate may offer at least some change to the school board.

While I do believe the Alexandria “establishment” looks poorly on criticism of ACPS, I think there are folks out there who generally support Wilson / status quo but are still fed up with ACPS. Baum clearly is willing to highlight ACPS issues and the School Board power holders don’t want here on the Board. I think that is a significant point in Baum’s favor.

In my experience, candidates like Baum (Baird is a great example) quickly and happily fold to the ACPS establishment. And a love of and devotion to Wilson is a HUGE indicator. I've watched people get destroyed by Wilson's "mom mob" as he calls them when they go up against him and ACPS. These women LOVE to take orders from the Alexandria patriarchy. That's who they are at their core.

Given her level of devotion to him...that tells me she'll be just like Baird and happily fold to the establishment.

What has Baum done to be labeled as devoted to Mayor Wilson? I’m still doing my research on both candidates. Can anyone give examples? Is Beaty somehow legitimately less devoted to Wilson?

Why is Gina's campaign facebook page private? That's weird.

I do see that some of her most enthusiastic supporters are the last people in Alexandria I would want to be associated with including one whose business depends on ACPS continuing to fail.

Hard no.

So if Baum and Beaty are both establishment candidates, then who do we want to elect in November? That’s what we really should be discussing.

I think it's obvious that an establishment candidate is exactly what voting Alexandrians want. Parents, teachers and voters are all happy with the school board (and city council and mayor). It's painfully obvious.

I don’t know Tim’s website address

The narrative on Baum's website is not based in reality. Apparently everything was great before covid and ACPS is a "fledgling" district? What the heck?
