Halloween Accident

Absolutely not. Maybe my kids are outliers, but I never had an incident where we had to run to a potty because of an urgent need. If your kids are trained, they can hold it for 3-5 min.

If your kids are so young they can’t potty before they leave to ToT and hold their pee while having fun running around, maybe they are too young to ToT or not actually potty trained - or you are keeping them out too long. How much candy does a 3yr old need?

Oldest DS (now 20yo) went to all of 3-4 houses when he was 3-5 years old, and was thrilled. At that age he preferred handing out candy and seeing the “big kids.” He didn’t need a diaper or pull up.

For elementary school students, yes I would assume a child wearing a pullup has special needs.

It’s ToT not traveling

Not everyone trick or treats in their own neighborhood. Sometimes people do travel and when you have young children you have to be prepared.

Ok but if you are traveling, you'll have your car parked in your general vicinity. At least leave the potty in the car.

Now you'll probably come back and claim you're ToT via city bus or cargo bike...

Are you really taking non-toilet trained children to other neighborhoods for ToT? I would think a couple blocks is fine for the toddler set. Even preschoolers are toilet trained?

DP. What the hell kind of bubble do you live in? I would venture that *most* kids in America do not live in a trick or treating area.

I admit she does not specifically address Halloween. I guess some people need to be told how to parent their children at every little step of the way.

I’m the person who mentioned carrying a small travel potty. I used the oh crap method at exactly age 2 with both my kids. I never diapered them again—not overnight, not in the car, not in the air, not at parties.

It was stressful for about 3 months and I probably used the portable potty once or twice a week at that stage. It’s the type that also turns into a toilet insert and that’s what I focused on—finding bathrooms when needed. But there were probably a dozen times with each child that they peed in the travel potty at a playground, gas station, etc. It worked brilliantly and got it done. They never needed to poop in it, but it wouldn’t have been a big deal if they had. The pee or poop goes in a little plastic bag that gets tied up and disposed of immediately. I would certainly understand if I saw one in use in my driveway!

Potty training early and with engagement is very confidence-boosting for kids. I say any tool that prevents backtracking is a winner

I personally wouldn't no. I suppose if I were SERIOUSLY concerned, I might just bring an extra pair of underwear stuffed into a backpack or my purse or something.

If a kid is so close to having just been potty trained that this is a concern, I seriously doubt we're going to be out for that long anyways.

Heck, my two youngest went out with their older brother this year, and came back in less than 40 minutes because it was 'cold' out.

My child is 4 and she goes through phases of using the little potty. Our daycare is a half hour drive from our home and she sometimes says she needs to go right as we get to the car which is a bit of a walk from the door.

It's interesting to see everyone's different opinions on this. Using the tiny travel potty anywhere is SO common among my neighborhood. There are lots of kids at the park, all potty training, and they all use the tiny potty whenever. Or see plenty of parents with the tiny potty in the back of the car, and use it when needed.

I think part of it is from COVID, too. My first kid was potty training during bad covid times, so no way we were running into a public bathroom when he needed to go...

To answer the questions, we would give my young 3yo a pullup on "special occasions" if we were doing something really fun or important that we didn't want to ruin with bathroom stress, like travel or an outdoor festival. Prioritize fun every once in a while! Totally depends on the kid. My 3o happily trick or treated in our neighborhood for over an hour (withouth a pullup, he's an old 3, but if i thought it was going to be an issue I wouldn't have thought twice about offering him one!).

We still do this with our 4 year old. We can be out an hour or two and not be within 5 mins of a toilet. It's entirely just in case, but is far more comfortable to know we don't have to enter a sudden panic mode if she drops a 5 minute klaxon

A warning haha, we've moved from the UK 2 years ago. I'm still dropping in very British specific words

What!? I have lived in 12 different places in this country, so trick-or-treat it all over the north east and south and never lived in an area that do not have trick-or-treating in our neighborhood! We did not live in very affluent areas either.

Oh, for heaven sakes, stop treating your child like an animal. They can hold it for 30 more seconds to get in the door. Start a routine and have them pee before they leave the daycare.

I once saw parent with a child who must have been at least 7 or 8 years old in line for a ride at an amusement park where child kept saying they needed to use the bathroom and parent wouldn’t take them. I saw later the child was wearing some kind of diaper and I think it was just so they could avoid having to take them.
