Where are your kid or his/her friends EDing this year?

No one should want their ED school to become a fad amongst their peer group (obviously the usual suspects are always popular for ED and REA applications, but still). It's sad, but a kid's first layer of competition is their peer group so I feel for that school with 11 kids EDing to Brown. Unless Brown is known for taking close to that many applicants from one high school that is why private school counselors will try to steer kids to other institutions, particularly if they have a sense that your kid isn't one of the X who is likely to be accepted.

Based on current Naviance numbers, looks like 20+ (including my kid) will apply ED to Brown from our big public school. Historically, about 10% from our school get in (overall, not just ED). It’s just a popular school. Nothing much to be done about it.

The Naviance numbers are the number of kids who requested a transcript be sent and not the number who have applied. So you don’t know how many of those ED vs RD

I don’t think this is right, at least not at my kid’s school. My kid has requested transcripts for nine schools, but only some of them show any 2024 applicants in Naviance. And the number is currently ticking up by the day, which leads me to conclude it’s reflecting submitted applications—or maybe some action taken by the guidance counselor on applications.

And while it doesn’t say ED vs RD, the numbers have started going up in the last week or so, which seems likely to be related to the Nov. 1 ED deadline.

It’s either requested transcripts or submitted, not sure. Either way it’s not ED. I know last year the school my DC applied ED to showed almost 50 applicants at the ED date. DC asked counselor, who said I think 8 or 9 applied ED.

Hmm. Still trying to figure out…

…if it’s requested, why wouldn’t Naviance show applicants for all nine of the schools where my kid requested transcripts; and
…if it’s submitted, why would counselors be submitting now if not to meet ED deadlines?

I also know Naviance configuration varies by school, so it’s possible that’s what’s going on.

Where in Naviance do you see these numbers? Our school uses SCOIR-is there a way to see these transcript numbers there too?

I think it’s transcripts requested. How does Naviance know if you have actually submitted your application?

Students’ Naviance accounts are connected to their Common App accounts.

The transcript requests thing would make sense if all of the schools where my kid had requested transcripts was showing 2024 applicants. But only some are.

Same. I don’t know where this is.

In Naviance above the scattergrams there are bars that show how many students have applied each year.

For one of the schools my child has submitted to and the transcript has been received Naviance does not show that anyone has applied for 2024. All of the other schools she’s has applied to show a bunch of applications.

In Naviance, click on a college, then click on the "admissions" tab. There's a bar chart that shows number of applicants per year. Some colleges are already showing a 2024 bar.

The UC schools don’t have EA or ED, but they might recruit for sports early. My kid had a classmate who was recruited the summer before senior year for her sport.

There is no bar chart in our Naviance. Only scattergram, which shows the number of applicants from 2023.

Not sports, and she claims friend is going to take a gap year, too. Could someone have already gotten an answer from UCLA if they applied as early as possible? I don’t know-we’re in VA and not considering any west coast schools

My kid here in VA had a meltdown last night because she just discovered the 30 day transcript deadlines. She was trying to get her common app done for all the places she is applying, and several of them suggest Nov 1.

I was able to talk her down because many of her schools are basically rolling and the deadlines are somewhat squishy. Her favorite has 2 EA dates, and there is some leeway on getting the official docs in. Another of her favorites sent mail a week or so ago saying they don’t even need official transcripts for her application to be complete.

Many schools give leeway for transcripts etc. UMD does not and if you don’t have a complete app by Nov 1 they will push you to RD where there is almost no chance of acceptance.

In the high achieving friend circle my DD has, it seems like usual suspects: REA Harvard, REA Princeton, ED Duke, ED Penn, ED Columbia, etc.

Did they not warn you about the deadline? At our school they warned us at all of the college night events.
