DS's top choice only has EA, that's why. |
Reach just means you have a good chance of being rejected. It does not necessarily mean the school your kid likes the most or would be happiest at. If you put rankings in perspective, you realize that each school has pros and cons. If your kid does ED, they are eliminating all the other options (if they get accepted). Many (most?) do not feel strongly enough to commit that early in the process (It also means you can’t decide based upon the best merit offer) |
By senior year?! Come on. |
IME they all talk despite guidance from admin not to. |
Based on current Naviance numbers, looks like 20+ (including my kid) will apply ED to Brown from our big public school. Historically, about 10% from our school get in (overall, not just ED). It’s just a popular school. Nothing much to be done about it. |
| No ED because kid doesn't have a clear preference. EA at Yale and home state university. |
| I’ve heard a couple W&M possible from our OOS high school. |
The Naviance numbers are the number of kids who requested a transcript be sent and not the number who have applied. So you don’t know how many of those ED vs RD |
I don’t think this is right, at least not at my kid’s school. My kid has requested transcripts for nine schools, but only some of them show any 2024 applicants in Naviance. And the number is currently ticking up by the day, which leads me to conclude it’s reflecting submitted applications—or maybe some action taken by the guidance counselor on applications. And while it doesn’t say ED vs RD, the numbers have started going up in the last week or so, which seems likely to be related to the Nov. 1 ED deadline. |
| My kid’s MCPS high school is at around 70 today in Naviance for UMD but I am sure more than twice that number will apply. The school requires a month before sending a transcript. |
This seems to be true for the seniors we know as well. Unless they're applying for a specific program or location, they want to have options and don't want to be locked in, which is fine. |
I am agreeing with the PP you quoted. I do think many 17/18yo do not feel strongly enough to commit this early in the process. Every April we see many threads of students still struggling to make a decision from just their admitted schools by May 1. My Senior does not know yet. She has a few reaches that she is going To apply EA and RD to, but she doesn’t trust herself enough at this stage to ED. And some of them she probably wouldn’t attend even if she was accepted. Also, she thinks she knows what she wants but is throwing a couple of schools in there that don’t fit the mold. who knows what could change with her preferences six months from now. |
It’s either requested transcripts or submitted, not sure. Either way it’s not ED. I know last year the school my DC applied ED to showed almost 50 applicants at the ED date. DC asked counselor, who said I think 8 or 9 applied ED. |
| Princeton and WashU are the only EDs I know about. |

Why do you ask?
