2018 “Decriminalization” of Metro fare evasion in DC

How about making fare jumpers pay 10x the stolen fare in "reparations" to Metro? Or they can work it off over a couple of weekends scrubbing station floors.

I have a high school student who often jumps the turnstile because his pass is in the bottom of his backpack. I wouldn’t call him lawless… lazy but not lawless. He doesn’t see the point of fishing his KRF pass out. I tell him to do it especially because he had a MAGA tourist grabbed him and yelled at him about being “lawless”. I think folks picking on teenagers are focusing on the wrong problem.

I think you failing to accept responsibility for raising a lazy and entitled thief, is you focusing on the wrong problem. YOU are the problem, pp.

Prior to 2018, it was a crime to jump Metro turnstiles. Criminals caught before 2018 could face up to a $300 fine and possibly even jail time, especially for repeat offenders.

Current law = not a crime. Offenders do not have to give their real name, and there is no penalty for giving police a fake name. Max fine (if the offender gives their real name) is $50; similar to a parking ticket.

Fare evasion is only one of many areas of law the DC council has tampered with.

The DC city counsel has only itself to blame for the skyrocketing crime epidemic in DC.

I mean it's DC, they do dumb stuff all. of. the. time.

This is not even the least bit shocking.

Is that fair?

How can you be arrested for something that is not a crime?

Yes, good idea, let people get away with small crimes and not expect them to keep escalating. Jump the fair at metro, why can’t we just drive a BMW off the lot, or just take someone else’s at gunpoint.

That seems reasonable doesn’t it.

Here’s an idea: Tase the punks who are jumping fate gates and transport them to Virginia where the cops will happily arrest them and put a boot up their ass for good measure.

And why should you be required to give the cops your real name??

Should be a crime to jump the fair collection. Don’t give the cops your name, no problem they will eventually learn the person’s identity when booking them. Longer it takes the longer they sit in a holding cell with their new friends.

Enforce small crimes and overall criminal activity goes down.

Exactly right.

Requiring anyone to do anything at any time is racist. Everything is racist.

It seems that obeying the law is racist

Except for hate crimes, natch.

Had fare evasion not been decriminalized, with the fine made unenforceable by the DC Council, WMATA would not have needed to spend $40M on new faregates, not to mention all of the OT pay for DC MPD to provide extra security at select stations, another expense not needed in a past more law abiding system. The decision by DC alone caused WMATA to incur many expenses + all the lost revenue.
