2018 “Decriminalization” of Metro fare evasion in DC

I think Pp was saying they tell him he SHOULD get the pass out, not that he should jump, if only to protect him from hecklers.

Remember when they arrested a kid for eating French fries on Metro?

Hard to believe what Metro allows now.

I stood by a metro gate and watched most people jump. I wondered why I had paid…

Requiring people to obey laws is racist. Check your privilege

I saved more than 6,000 from 2020-2023 by not paying. I’m already rich thinking I should donate it to the NRA.

The justice system is inequitable.

I have a high school student who often jumps the turnstile because his pass is in the bottom of his backpack. I wouldn’t call him lawless… lazy but not lawless. He doesn’t see the point of fishing his KRF pass out. I tell him to do it especially because he had a MAGA tourist grabbed him and yelled at him about being “lawless”. I think folks picking on teenagers are focusing on the wrong problem.

MAGA tourist. Maybe just a law abider from the burbs.

Your kid is LAZY. AND BREAKING THE LAW.

Tell them to hold the pass in their hand.

Are they intending to go to college?

If so, they will need to get used to providing a pass to enter the dorm.
Enter the elevator/floor access.
Enter their room.
Eat in the dining hall.
Pay for books.
Show for exams.

Have your kid start practicing. Put the pass in a more reasonable pocket in their backpack.

The Council really opened Pandora's Box re: this issue, and those who commit crimes in the system almost always enter without paying It's also one less way to be tracked or identified if engaging in criminal &/or violent behavior.

To make it a civil penalty that is unenforceable was a farce.

I was recently traveling on another city's metro/subway and was struck by how clean it was. At one time, our Metro was pretty clean. No longer. When did DC decide it was ok to accept Third World standards of cleanliness, safety, and service?

You are a terrible parent if you condone this type of behavior. Period.

Not really limited to the Metro system in DC, is it? Have you walked around Gallery Place lately? Seen all the cars with expired paper tags or no tags?

There are many more examples of DC accepting

Third World standards of cleanliness, safety, and service?

than the 2 above...

I think that people just got tired of fighting for a city when so few living there actually care. Things go in cycles…just let it die it’s death and eventually it will be renewed. This is just temporary return to the 1980’s, which is all the rage, I guess.

So much graffiti in Rock Creek Park now. It's starting to look like NYC in 1980s. Such a shame.
