How are the vibes at Case Western?

Lol

I went to Case for grad school and loved the snow. It doesn't stop life like it does here in DC or where I'm from (Philly). It snows a few inches many nights, looks pretty and life goes on.

Cleveland is a great city and I have quite a few friends who settled there and now live lives identical to mine here in DC (but with less stress). it has a large educated, professional community due in part to all the hospitals.

yes- great for pre-med for many reasons. They have a top Med school and nursing school and are sandwiched between 2 hospitals (University and Cleveland Clinic)

Thanks!! How is the campus compare to Pitt U? DC likes Pitt U but the campus is really busy with big roads and traffic. But Carnegie Mellon's campus is fine eventhough is just next to Pitt U. Is Case's campus similar to Pitt U or CMU?

I have been to all three campuses and Case combined two schools that looked like CMU(Case and Western Reserve), ie more campusy and easier to walk and they are separated by by Euclid, which is busy like forbes.

I've not been to Pitt or CMU but I went to Case. It's not in an area that feels like a downtown city at all but is surrounded by University Hospitals of Cleveland plus the museums (with their lawns/gardens) and homes. There is one main road (Euclid) that cuts through campus but it's more of a Blvd than a highway or a downtown city street.

The CWRU campus is in a far corner of the city so quite separate from Cleveland center city. It definitely has a campus feel with many green quads and open areas. It is in an area called "University Circle" which contains many museums and places of interest. My DS's freshman dorm was next to the Cleveland Botanical Gardens which are beautiful. Severance Hall (the Cleveland Orchestra) is on campus as well as is The Cleveland Museum of Art. My DS took advantage of these at times but spent way more time at Little Italy which is a brief walk from campus!

Is Cleveland Institute of Music easy walking from Case Western Campus?

I've heard mixed views from undergrads, but all the graduate students I know that have gone there have loved it. I'm not sure why this split, but I think having so many STEM majors can make for a more stressful vibe--and it's harder for some to enjoy the city quite as much until you are legal drinking age, have a car, or a more developed taste for culture (and friends with the same).

CIM borders Case’s north residential campus. They actually housed their students in one of Case’s north campus dorms (Cutter) until they opened a new dorm a few years ago.

For a lab interested in business, I would look at Michigan, Wisconsin, NYU, Northwestern and Indiana.

Could anyone in this thread compare and contrast Case Western with Rice and Wash. U.?

I can’t but I can tell you that the kids I know who apply to CWRU always apply to Rice and Wash U, too. The only one I know who chose one of the latter two over CWRU went to Wash U with a way bigger aid package. They liked the kids at Case better but had 4 other siblings so they had to chase aid.

Rice was a big deal for a while and I love the neighborhood around the campus, but it fell out of favor in our high school and neighborhood circles. I couldn’t tell you why.

Thanks. Would you happen to know how CWRU is for humanities and social sciences? When I look on Niche, it seems not that competitive for humanities and social sciences. If that’s true, and is fine in those fields, maybe it’s a great near safety for humanities and social sciences students.

Besides nursing - case undergraduates are not admitted by major. I think it is not an ultra competitive school, but probably not a safety for any student.

My child is a sophomore at Case, engineering major and likes it. Serious student that enjoys art and good food. Usually leaves campus on the weekend at least once to explore the city.

I've been to all three campuses as well. It's like if you combined Pitt and CMU features - you get Case. When you are on the part of campus by Euclid, it kinda/sorta feels like Pitt in that it has that busy, hustling feel. Especially when you hear ambulances going to one of the hospitals. Away from Euclid, it feels more like CMU in that it is more campusy.

Plus, being next to the museums also reminds me of Pitt (I know CMU is close to the museums but Pitt is much closer)
