How are the vibes at Case Western?

Anonymous
Echoing everyone here who said it’s an intense, studious place. There are a bunch of kids there who wish they were at CMU or an Ivy, and another contingent that is UMC or rich and got into CMU or an Ivy but got merit aid packages at Case. Parents of Case students are often pretty value-conscious and the types that will move into any house as long as it’s into the very best school district, if that make sense. The people who I know who went to Case are really successful doctors and engineers. Engineers have huge opportunities nearby and I know a lot of kids who got great industry internships in Cleveland (tons of manufacturing companies that you’ve never heard of but are really important) and at NASA, too (big facility nearby).

And I have to say that Cleveland is a very underrated city. It's a pretty great to spend four years. And just a nice group of kids. DS is in med school there, but we would have been happy if he had been an undergrad there.

I would recommend visiting, maybe in the winter, which can be cold and long. I like Cleveland but haven't visited in a while.

Hopkins - Carnegie Mellon - U of Rochester - Case Western are all, to me, similar schools, even down to their tech/business + arts focuss. They are wonderful schools for serious students.

For a lab interested in business, I would look at Michigan, Wisconsin, NYU, Northwestern and Indiana.

Could anyone in this thread compare and contrast Case Western with Rice and Wash. U.?

+100. My DD may know your DS. She is in surgery residency at CWRU. Anyway, she and her DH love Cleveland and the campus.

I can’t but I can tell you that the kids I know who apply to CWRU always apply to Rice and Wash U, too. The only one I know who chose one of the latter two over CWRU went to Wash U with a way bigger aid package. They liked the kids at Case better but had 4 other siblings so they had to chase aid.

Rice was a big deal for a while and I love the neighborhood around the campus, but it fell out of favor in our high school and neighborhood circles. I couldn’t tell you why.

My son must be an exception. Didn't apply to Rice or Wash U. He limited his private schools (except for two ivies) to those that had the potential to provide merit. In addition to CWRU, he applied to NEU, BU, Lehigh and 6 publics.

My DS is a junior. He loves it. Generally kids there study during the week. Week nights are for clubs and cultural events. Weekends there is plenty of socializing and partying, but it does tend to be reserved for weekends. His sophomore dorm was particularly party heavy but it depends who you live with. He has had no trouble finding a good mix of studious kids and social kids.

Huge mix of building architecture. Business building looks like epcot.

No, the business building at CWRU looks like the Guggenheim Bilbao, or like the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA -- because it's designed by the same architect (Pritzker Prize winner Frank Gehry).

Epcot?!

Rice felt like a "golden retriever" type place- maybe a nerdy golden retriever, but friendly, sunny (both the weather and the students!), caring, lovable. We didn't really get those vibes from CWRU. Maybe it's the weather or something but it seemed a lot more serious and hardcore. More along the lines of Carnegie Mellon.

Thank you for correcting me.

Is Case Western good for Biology or Pre-med?

yes- great for pre-med for many reasons. They have a top Med school and nursing school and are sandwiched between 2 hospitals (University and Cleveland Clinic)

Maybe Notre Dame for a golden retriever-type kid attracted to Case for business? Much smaller than UVA, Indiana or Michigan.
